p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Un-boxing photo gear videos

Hey, ya all. First time poster (on this topic). Just recently watched one of those un-boxing camera gear videos shot on a card table and hosted by a self-important gearhead who has no idea that he is ruining the opening of Christmas and birthday presents. It is quite an event (for him) because he is in possession of something you don't have, usually a prototype camera loner from the manufacturer, or just a camera you don't have. I must admit that I find myself falling into a semi-trance as he, never a she, painstakingly removes bubble wrap to reveal the contents, or peels off plastic film from a 3" screen while he carefully places each object near the emptied box. Great fun, I guess. I was wondering if you are as thrilled as I am watching the un-boxings.

Unless it was ME unboxing a D3s and 500 f4 VR, then no.

I watched one or two of these videos but never again. I'm not certain what the attraction is, as they seem like just another time waster.

I watched one where the 'gear-head' almost sliced his finger off with a box cutter type knife! It's classic moments like that one, that keeps me (occasionally) watching un-boxing videos. .

Where does this "unboxing" originate? I never saw it in the US for nearly 50 years, and then now it is all over the place. Is it from foreign countries or perhaps a youth movement on the internet?

Wikipedia has a short history. Seems like it just sprang up and developed a following among those that consider it interesting.

Maybe it's just my age, but unless one is a packaging enginer (or John Power) that is about as interesting as watching paint dry.
