banding examples

anyone experienced banding as in the examples above? These are not my pics, but my issue is the same.

I only get them with high-iso, and when slightly under-expose.

Does the banding suggest my non-banding images are degraded in less obvious ways too?

Any idea how much a new sensor costs? Or is another fix available? Or do I live with it by avoiding under-exposed high-iso shots.

I can't see the linked images, I get an error message when I try. But when my 5DII started exhibiting signs of what I call pattern banding (a sort of subtle grid-like pattern) I sent it in to Canon along with a DVD of some of the images that showed the pattern. They fixed it at no charge. I don't know exactly what they did, all they said was they brought it back to specs, which doesn't sound like they did anything drastic like replacing the sensor.

sorry about the bad link. I fixed it.

Has anyone had banding fixed by canon NOT using warranty or CPS? If so, how much did it cost?

why do you under-expose at a high ISO? Why under-expose in dark conditions?seriously?

usually not deliberate, but I noticed it on test shots.

After more experimentation, the banding occurs at iso's as low as 400. Again, only noticable when shot is under-exposed.

I am often forced into under exposure on my 1DIIn at high ISO due to truly lousy light and not having any other choices (even when shooting with a f/1.8 lens). I've never noticed banding like I see in your pictures at high ISO or frankly in any condition I've used this camera in. I don't have a technical answer for you, but assuming you are shooting in a "normal" way (whatever that is), I'd be suspicious of the camera. Do check your setup carefully as I've found myself a couple of times being convinced that the camera had gone wacky when it was in fact a setting I changed unconsciously of by accident or maybe there are just gremlins in my house

rongoe, I have exactly the same issue with you but only occurs at high ISO i.e. ISO1000 and above where you can see the banding at underexposed area. Unsure about it's fault I have quickly sold it for almost the price I paid for and went for 5D now.

It was an issue with a small amount of bodies when they were new, It was sensor change under warranty usually. I think a sensor change would be cost prohibitive at this age, as probably more exensive than what the camera is worth

Looks like bad sensor.

I recommend sending to Canon for repair. Before you do, if you qualify, make sure you are CPS Gold and this item is listed for coverage of their discount.

Sorry, mine was under warranty, but they had to replace the whole sensor unit after two tries. Was flawless after that.

You can get that on any body right before a shutter goes.

any suggestions for testing whether its the shutter or the sensor?

anyone have an idea how much shutter costs to replace? I've heard $200 but that sounds low. Is that with CPS gold?

Same question for sensor-- how much $$ ?

It's more than 200 by more than 200 for either repair.

Reason I ask is, there are some camera bodies that are older that produce banding/interference.

do you mean there are some early serial numbers of the 2dn that are known to produce banding/interference?
If so, might canon repair even though out of warranty?

No, I dont' know about the 1D2n, and for the 5D they didn't do anything. They just posted a thing saying that at high ISO, you may exeperience interference with the lens/camera/ai-servo or something like that. May not even have been Canon that posted it. I wish someone would chime in about it that had the link.

IIRC it was the 5D and there were certain lenses that affected it. 85 1.8, and 70-200 2.8IS are 2 that stick out in my head.

When I investigated my problem there was a small range that had this issue. But I don't recollect the range.

Looks like sensor to me. Here is the kind of banding I had,. Looks the same as yours. I saw artifacts down to ISO 400.

ISO 1250:
