I recently traded my mint 5D2 w/grip for an equally mint 1D3 with someone here and can tell you I'll never go back to a xxD body again. The 1D3 is an awesome piece of machinery.
If my previous 1dmk3 had the 5dmk2 IQ it would be a dream camera.
Is there some kind of miraculous copy of 1dmk3 that my old 1dmk3 was not?
In ideal perfect studio lighting it performed well for a 10MP camera I guess. I just did not feel the love like so many are discussing.
I think the files are fine for 300dpi print. The lack of MP flexibility left this camera undesirable. Mind you I love wideangle story telling and not long telephoto lenses that put majoirty of the subjects in the viewfinder (ex. birding, sports)
Nice to see some appreciate the 1dmk3. I miss the performance of AF but otherwise I am much more pleased with my consistent results of my 5dmk2's and even my 5d.
I love my 1dIII...the only things I miss are a higher res lcd and, at times, ff. Other than that it was used to take some of my best images. It could be better, as could most things in life, but its still a very capable camera.
I love mine, I might be tempted by a 5DIII if:
-it doesn't increase MP's,
-no banding,
Adds:
-more fps,
-weather sealing,
-pro AF.
What ever Canon does, I don't think I'll need to upgrade for at least a year, especially if the rumored 35LI and 24-70L updates are released.
I love the 1D3 for its performance but I find myself using the 7D more often for its versatility. The built-in flash trigger, video, and higher res-LCD are nice touches.
