p.2 #1 · Nikon fined in Switzerland for anti-competitive practices
I was talking to a local small camera dealer who also sells Nikon. I asked him if he was honoring the latest Nikon discounts/rebates. For instance, the 55-200VR (plastic lens mount) is selling for $149 and I just saw one at the local Target. He said, no, he was not and added something about Nikon won't re-imburse him for it and that Nikon wants to kill off the local dealers. He said Leica killed off the local dealers years ago and only sold to the biggest camera stores. He added look what happened to Leica when you could not walk into a local store and see the products, which created a groundswell of interest. I don't get any of this but back in the day, I would't mind buying greymarket Ais lenses because I could not afford them otherwise. They never needed servicing. If they did, a repair shop in Chicago could fix them.

buying a camera in the country does not prevent any of the following.
Herb....
I totally agree with you Herb. I can get camera or lens or flash etc. here in the US market modified exactly the way Barnie listed. So if they do this abroad or here doesn't matter.
What if you went to Japan (or other country) for a vacation. Your lens broke and you bought your new lens there.
Don't you think you should be able to get it serviced, if necessary, here in the US? It is Nikon's product bought at legitimate Nikon store.

Sheesh talk about the pot calling the kettle black. In 3 threads with your name as the last poster - Rodolfo Paiz - today, you are having trouble/disagreements with Zabrabot, Ralph Conway and you wrote that Imagemaster comes off "as an egomaniac".
You should monitor your own behavior before commenting on others.
I'm well aware of my own behavior, thanks. And though I make lots of mistakes, and make 'em often, I don't believe my comments were off-base in any of these three examples.
Feel free to read through those threads, and my comments therein, before forming an opinion so hastily. My comments were solidly echoed by others, and similar sentiments had been expressed previously as well in both cases. If you still have any feedback after you've done that, I'd love to hear it.

i think something really simple: Nikon should service any non-counterfeit Nikon product bought in any country in any other country for a price that is noticeably above, but not gouging, of that of a Nikon product officially imported into that country. refusing to service anything bought in another country under any circumstance is stupid. preventing a dealer from selling a Nikon product outside the country and preventing a dealer from buying from an authorized Nikon dealer in another country is plain monopolistic. other companies offer an international warrantee to start with.

I'm with Herb and Gregg here. I understand Nikon's thinking on this, and from a business owner's point of view I don't agree with a single bit of it. I think they're shooting themselves in the foot.
