Thedroid list is similiar to my current kit. But I would trade the 50 1.8 for a 18-105 VR - yes I know it has the crap plastic mount but I haven't broke mine yet, and it is the aways attached lens for casual shooting. It is sharp with decent contrast if you avoid the end f's. I bought my 12-24 used EX+ for 800. The 70-300 was a Nikon refurb for 250, as was my 18-105. I've used these on my d300 and my d7k, no complaints. Its all DX except for the tele, but if you ever acquire a FX body you will actually have a real FX lens.

If I had a D7000 and $1,500 to spend on lenses -

Tokina 11-16 - $670
Sigma 17-50 - $670
Nikon 55-200 - $150

I would be sorely tempted to spend the lot on a 24 or 45mm PC-E.

If not, it would be Tamron 17-50 + used 70-200 VR1.

You should be able to pick up a great selection of 5 or 6 manual focus lenses.

Hmm. Tough choices. I'm assuming D7000...

Sigma 17-70 OS ($460) (or stretch the budget a bit for the Nikon 16-85)
Nikon 35 1.8 ($200)
Nikon 50 1.8D ($100)
Nikon 105mm VR ($800 used)

This is with about 30 seconds of thought.

I'm going to treat my prices as though I was shopping for good (but not insane) deals. I typically like to take pictures of people, a bit of landscape, and occasionally sports or macro.

As an FX MF shooter, I'd by BGN rated lenses, or EX lenses if found for good deals:
20/3.5 AI-S $200
28/2 AI/AI-S $300
50/1.2 AI/AI-S $400
105/2.5 - $150
180/2.8 - $250
80-200 f/4.5 AI $50
50-135 f/3.5 AI-S $50
TC+Extension rings $100

If I did payed work on FX:
35/2 D - $250
Sigma 85/1.4 $800
Nikon 180/2.8 D $400

If I was a DX shooter:

Tokina 12-24/4 - $350
28/2 AI/AI-S - $300 used
50/1.8AI-S - $100 used
105/2.5 AI-S - $150 used
Tokina 50-135/2.8 - $600 used

You can never go wrong with a 50 1.4

My most used lens ever is the 85mm 'D' I use it for just about anything I can point a camera at.
The only other lens I tote around is an ancient 28-70 AF-S, having sold all of the unused stuff.
