My son is going to go to Austrailia and i am looking for something for Christmas for him. Was wondering if anyone has experience with the Joby gorilla pod Focus http://joby.com/gorillapod/focus/ for a travel tripod. No real long or heavy lenses his gear is
40D, EF 28-105, EF 100-300 and probably my sigma 10-20.

Might be cutting it close for shipping in time for Christmas but Ebay is full of excellent knockoffs from China of the SLR Zoom sized version (which is just fine for the gear you list) for around $10-12 shipped.
Their little Joby Ballhead is fantastic for the money though. Small, light, holds decent weight and actually has arca swiss style dovetail on its clamps so it even works with all the major brand camera brackets

I think the Gorillapods are jokes as actual camera supports, though I like them as flash stands. For something more useful with a camera but still pocketable, a Leica table tripod or the inexpensive Manfrotto version are a lot more useful.
