Yes, that is a real problem for stability. The ergonomics are terrible and at some angles the sun is just impossible.

I'd be reluctant to have someone buy a photography gift for me, many accessories are a matter of taste. Getting software for me would be a total waste.
Perhaps a lens mug, or a gift card. Even a memory card would need to be the right type, size, and speed, so ask first.

yeah, it's really tricky to know for this sort of thing unless you have some clue where to start with them and it seems like you don;t
