True. People take worse pictures now, as they seem to get a tendency to stretch their arms while taking photographs instead of holding the camera close to body.

Yes, that is a real problem for stability. The ergonomics are terrible and at some angles the sun is just impossible.

Petkal, I take it you read it cover to cover.

Maybe Petkal wrote the book and is subtly spamming everyone!

Far better than the original cover, and it suggests this gift:
Photoshop Elements (maybe doable at under $100 if you shop around)

That is Hi-larious! Reminds me of a super 8 film my dad's friend took. He had the camera turned backwords and took a movie of his eye.

Seriously, here's a 58 mm Canon 500D for less than I thought they go for. 58 mm Canon 500D
If that sale is suspect, I was thinking of putting mine on the Buy and Sell, and I'm reliable.

If they don't already have one like it, the Canon camera bag is a great deal for $35. It's my most used backpack

The olive green one?

I've been looking at those myself. So they are pretty sturdy, huh?

I'd be reluctant to have someone buy a photography gift for me, many accessories are a matter of taste. Getting software for me would be a total waste.

Perhaps a lens mug, or a gift card. Even a memory card would need to be the right type, size, and speed, so ask first.

Although I think of the 1.4 as the "nifty," and the 1.8 as the "thrifty," rongoe clearly meant the 1.8 -- and that's $99.00 at B&H.

Best approach - it's usually not a good idea to try to read someone's mind regarding what they really want (or need). Let them make the decision.

yeah, it's really tricky to know for this sort of thing unless you have some clue where to start with them and it seems like you don;t

According to wiki, the nifty-fifty is the f1.8 mkII
