I think you're on a good track here. What about putting a pic of Kurt Cobain on the cassette and then leave it dangling out of a grungy trash can by the unraveled tape? Or use that pic of the baby underwater from his record.

Please pardon me, I have heard the name Kurt Cobain somewhere but I have to Google it to know whom he was.
