p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Anyone have a Spyder3 Monitor Calibrator?

Hey guys,

I'm looking to use one of these to calibrate my monitor. I can't justify the price tag at the moment, and I can't find anyone on CL with this to borrow from. So I thought that if someone had this at home and isn't using it, would it be okay to borrow it for a day or two?

I'll pay shipping both ways, including confirmation. My feedback here is still somewhat new (8 positive), but on eBay, I have over 240 positive feedback, and 0 negative. I can send you a message via eBay with my account if you'd like to see it.

A big thanks for your consideration!

Justin

FYI: The Spyder3 Pro is currently $120.00 at Amazon and there is a $20.00 mail-in rebate available.

And if you are serious about calibration, it should be done at least monthly.

as was said calibration is not a one time event. at minimum you warm up your monitor, yes even LED/LCD types, for at least 30 minutes and then do the cal. you also will want to repeat this at minimum monthly to maintain reasonable high quality repeatability.

there are further variables as ambient light measurements that will influence your calibration. once initially done the monthy recal can take up to 20 minutes depending on your target patch levels availability

I don't mind if it's a one time affair and I don't do it again for a while. I'm not a pro.... I just need my monitor to reflect with some accuracy what color's I'm seeing. Thanks for all your guys' input so far.

Most of the lens rental houses rent colorimeters. You still need software to use them and for that you need a license. Why not just buy a used unit?

I checked them out, and it's out of my budget range.

The problem is if a guy's got a colorimeter that's working for him he's very reluctant to let it out of his hands. If your monitor is as far out as you say it can be improved with a visual calibration.

There should be a rough visual color calibration in windows or or your PP or your video driver software. There's plenty of info on the web.

no you don't. in the case of xrite i1 profiler software for the monitor can be downloaded freely from their website and as long as their unit is used it recognizes the unit and allows its baseline use. that being for the screen. if you wish to add capability you buy the code and it unlocks it.

I have a Spyder 2 sitting in my cabinet unused. I would let it go for a song.

Speaking of calibrating monitors, have any of you (using a 64 bit Windows 7 system), had any issues with the Spyder or Xrite calibrators? I need to know which one to get and I've read that some have issues with and/or no driver updates to work with a 64 bit system.

Spyder
I used it for few years and found it useless and timeconsuming. The only "calibration" you would need are your eyes and printing untill you like it. It takes mostly three times to get what you want. sometimes, same big size.
BTW, using Spyder doesn't cut down on the number to "proof prints."
