I have this same dilemma all the time, which 20 lenses to pack in my bag for a 6 hour hike in Zion. I usually just end up taking all 67 of them, better safe than sorry!

Here's another shot with 200 f/1.8 so that you might understand a bit better why is that I'd like to have two lens copies (again).
(Shot with 1DsMkII, and a major crop)

You'd probably be amazed at how good 500 f/4.5L is.
I used the 500/4.5 in the past and it is a fine lens. However, the lack of IS, greater MFD, and especially the loss of AF with a 1.4 x killed it for my needs.

That is all true, except I've never tried to use it with 1.4xTC......in theory it should have AFd with 1D bodies.
However, the key strengths for me were its relative ease of hand-held shooting and IQ very similar to 500 f/4 IS.
In fact, if it was not for the introduction of 500 II, I wouldn't have sold my 500 f/4.5L. I would have kept it as a lightweight alternative to my 500 f/4.

Sorry, Michael, I do not understand either how they did it.
The 500 MkII probably should have been on my list but, I just acquired a Mk I in the last few weeks and I'm smitten with this lens. Can't imagine how the Mk II could be that much better than my Mk I.
14 2.8
17-40 f4
24 TSE - I don’t know what it does, but if I had one, I’d find out
24-105 f4
35 1.4
50 1.4
50 2.5 Macro
70-200 2.8 IS
70-200 F4
85 1.2 (FD mount lens, it’s beautiful)
85 1.8
100 2.8 Macro
135 f2
200 f2 IS
300 2.8 IS
400 2.8 IS
So that's 16, the best I could do. I guess the last four would be old FD lenses to mess with
20 Leica Noctilux lenses purchased twenty years ago, so I could sell them today and buy every lens Canon makes. (With the new Canon lenses and price increases, maybe not.)

It's obvious they kept trying for a boy.
BTW...I don't think it's possible for me to have 20 lenses...but you never know what tomorrow may bring.
