p.1 #1 · Album Photos: Red Tree, Queensberry, Renaissance

Here are some recent client albums and one sample that have come in with some thoughts on each.

Red Tree Flush Mount
Pros:
- great selection of cover materials
- I like the fonts available for imprinting
- ProDPI printing is very nice
- fair, middle of the road pricing
- shipping box was in good shape upon receiving and without branding
- no discoloration at the spine

Cons:
- I find the binding the least refined of the three companies posted here today.
- I don't like the way the spine folds and lays when the book is open and laying flat.
- shipped out at the very end of their posted delivery time frame (a hair over 3 weeks)

Queensberry Press Album

Shown here in the blue buckram, similar material to what you'd find in an encyclopedic volume at a library - this will be a new offering for me: an album concentrating on storytelling through a concise collection of images, presented simply with one image per page on a matte textured paper.

Pros:
- absolutely superb construction and binding
- fantastic press printing
- aside from printing, same exact materials as their traditional luster print albums
- luxurious, heavy mats
- simple but classy drawstring bag
- various papers available
- the press album is available with mats as shown or flush mount
- full range of Queensberry covers available
- printed and shipped within 2 weeks
- quick delivery from New Zealand via DHL.... 2 days
- I like the imprinting

Cons:
- same price range as a Renaissance album for any given size, despite being press printed
- very thick
- shipping box not particularly strong and was somewhat misshapen upon receiving
- this matted variation of the press album doesn't lay flat terribly easily

Queensberry Press Book
Pros:
- exceptional press printing
- variety of papers available
- all queensberry covers are available
- quick printing and shipping
- rigid shipping box
- I like the protective Mayou case
- I prefer the magazine style binding

Cons:
- expensive
- I'm not sold on the graduation day looking string hanging off

Renaissance Albums "Fine Art Book"

Pros:
- Local, I can pick it up in Port Chester if I want.
- good printing, luster prints
- very nice construction, what I think should be the minimum level of quality
- comes with a padded box
- variety of leathers available and a few decent silks
- great customer service
- the "fine art" books with split prints have a small gutter. I actually think it's the perfect size.

Upper Middle pricing

Cons:
- somewhat antiquated cover design. I've had a bride refer to a sample as looking like a bible.
- limited imprinting options
- sometimes it's a 2 week production time, sometimes it's 5-ish
- I consider a number of their album materials to be not options at all

Note: I do love their Mercer album for engagements.

Queensberry Flush Mount Album

Pros:
- dripping in quality
- most supple leathers I've felt
- I like the 1/2 or 1/4 cover photo option
- thick end paper
- great printing - matches my screen
- the most refined binding
- handsome looking display box as well as drawstring bag
- 7" parent copies available for any of their larger album sizes, exact same proportions

Cons:
- larger gutter than I'd prefer
- expensive
- I'd like a beefier shipping box

Thanks for this. I use red tree and queensberry duo. What's the difference between say the press printed albums and a standard matted queensberry (like a duo but with no digital pages)

Is price difference a bit?

Great stuff Brian. Thanks for posting.

So the Queensberry Press Albums seem to be about the same cost (if a little more) than a midrange flushmount digital album (like Finao) until you add the matted look, then it passes the cost of Finao or any of the others. Do you sell the press Album as a wedding album?

Is the "Queensberry Flushmount" the Duo or is that another Queensberry offering?

Queensberry definitely wins when it comes to the binding. I don't know of any that are that tight/small.

Diane - I am selling the press album as a "museum style" alternative to a middle of the road flush mount and as an entry level taste of the Queensberry quality. It could also in various sizes serve as a parent or companion album to a larger Queensberry product if the parents didn't just want a duplicate. Will people buy it? I'm not sure.. but those I have shown it to were intrigued, impressed that I could tell the entire story of a wedding in 40 images, and ultimately booked.

Inku - when you are designing a Queensberry in Photojunction, you must first select the page style (in order of expense:
- matted overlay (single mat)
- flush mount
- matted page mount (double mat)
- duo

I'm imagining Brian shooting these samples on his D3s, on high speed mode... shooting off 500 shots.

I was just shitting bricks, so I had to check. Yup, I got the Duo. Hahaha. I'll post images of mine once I get it. Should be first week of December.

Rich - very funny

Actually, the D3s DID help considering I shot these with window light on a rainy day at 5000iso.

Tobiah -

The difference between the press albums and the standard matted queensberry albums is A, price. and B, much more limited in sizes and options. For instance: no page mount, no small digital duplicates.

QB rocks. Yes, they are expensive, but I do manage to sell them - to DUTCH people

do you print on the stock press paper or the arty ones?
