I just scored a used Manfrotto Expan b/g system yesterday. I have problems with the cardboard cores in rolls of seamless sagging from heat and humidity. I'd like to use the aluminum cores from the system inside the cardboard cores so I can switch out paper. The problem is the cardboard cores are just a hair bigger than the aluminum ones so they slip when you wind them up with the chain drive. Does anyone have first hand experience with a method of binding or shimming the cardboard tube to lock it to the aluminum? I'd rather not unroll an entire new roll of paper and tape it to the alum. core.
I figured it out. I put a wrap or two of gaffer's tape on the end of the aluminum core, then folded a piece of thick grip tape (like skateboard grip or stair tread) and shoved it between the cardboard core and the tape wrapped aluminum. The grip tape is aggressive enough to bite into the cardboard and the gaffer's tape. It doesn't slip at all.
You might also use wood wedges made from a wood paint stir sticks you can get at a hardware store. Also FYI, 2" ID PVC pipe will work as an inexpensive substitute for the aluminum tube.
Chuck, I tried wedges but they didn't grip the aluminum. I already have the aluminum tubes so the PVC isn't necessary. I doubt even sched 40 PVC is rigid enough for a 107" span.

I have a DIY set-up and keep them up all the time. They do sag a bit but I use them with muslins and it's not a problem for me. When I shoot I just give them 1/2 turn and the concave sag turns into a convex bow then levels out.
