p.1 #1 · The Drifter

Not quite a self portrait, but often times it is how I feel.

Used 6 images to create this.

Keith,

I think this is an awesome composite. I would like to hear your thoughts on this. What, Why, Objectives, whatever....... I personally really like this image.

Here is a new version.
Added some fog in the valley of the sand dunes. Corrected shadow on the hiker and added a tree and foot prints in the sand.

What do you guys think of these additions?

Many times in life or on our journys, we find ourselves in desolate places and maybe even lost. I keep my mind and spirit on the cross.

Thats what it means for me.
Most of the time I am out alone when I head out to photograph. I gotta drive 12 hours just to get started. Sometimes I do not get to sleep until day 3 of the journey since it takes me so long to get the hell out of Texas. I am pretty whipped out as I push myself onward.

I find my peace of mind in my faith. Some may not like my faith. But it's not about them.

I think sometimes it ruins it for the viewer to hear what the image represents from the artist, because it can mean something completely different to them (the viewer).
Most of the time I never explain what my illustrations represent because of this.
Sometimes it needs no explaination.
But if someone wants to know, I will always share what it means to me.
Just as I always share the locations I travel to.

Since you asked I will offer my opinion. I don't like the rework at all. Especially the tree. So let's go back to the original.

The right side of this image is not doing anything for you. The shadows on the rippling sand in the right foreground are at least 90 degrees out of phase with the sun placement, and the more one moves past the center of this image the more noticeable that gets. Coupled with the fact that the car is out of place and adds nothing to this image IMO and should be removed.

What I would like to see tried here is making this a vertical. Crop the bottom one shadow's width below the hiker's shadow. Then crop the right side to just include the smaller stand-alone peak to the right of the main "cross" peak. Then adjust the height to a 5:7 aspect ratio.

If you wanted to get real gamey and have the skills, I would like to see the sun and sky on the right moved over to the left, so that the center of the sun is just barely to the right of the highest peak of the cross mountain (but at the same height as you have it now). I really like the dark and dramatic sky just to the right and below the sun, and would like to see that moved into the right side of a vertical composition.

The mountain with the snow is the wrong color to my eye. It is at the same time too cool and has a hint of magenta, both of which are off to me. Might benefit from a separate selection and bit of sepia toning.

I think this idea and image has a ton of potential.

OMG YES! That's just SICK it's so good. Again, just my opinion, but this version is so far above V1.0.

The question is - how do YOU like it? It's your baby.

EDIT: You could still crop this slightly tighter. Take off half the dune on the bottom (leaving the trail of footprints just above the bottom of the image) and crop on the right at least half the space from the edge to the right side of the small mountain. It would put the Drifter right onto the bottom rule of thirds, with more space in the direction he is looking.

That said, your vertical crop puts the foreground dune horizon at the bottom rule-of-thirds point, so it works fine as is.

The longer I look at this the more I like it. Stunning!

I think I like both versions now.
Did not like the vertical as much in the begining since the car and dead tree were part of the message.

But the vertical still conveys the same message and I now like it as much for its simplicity.

The world has come to have a very short attention span. Simple photos with a single simple message are prized for both.

The re-work is much better because of it's simplicity. The car and the tree simply detracted from the "message" IMHO. I like the crop just the way it is.
