p.1 #1 · Advertising Pricing

A fairly large manufacturer is wanting to use one if my images for advertising their product. They would like full rights, but I don't want to go that route. What is a good rate for a one time use of the image? It will be in print, not web use. Thanks!

Alot more details are neccessary for good pricing info. I often use GettyImages.com and their license calculator as a guide.

Pricing is generally based on several factors. Placement - where in the magazine does it appear; Circulation - how many people will see the ad; Duration - for how long will the ad run; and Size - how much page real estate does the ad occupy.

FotoQuote software and a couple of web sites try to give price ranges for different usages, but mostly it comes down to the publication's budget, and whether you're willing to accept it. If you ask for $x,000 and their budget is $x0, you may not want to settle for their offer. I have yet to find a publication that pays anything near what FotoQuote says it should.

How good is the image? How much $$$ would you expect to make from its future use-- or pleasure would you get out of futures use? Would the company consider full, but non-exclusive rights? What rights would they be willing to leave with you for your own promotional/personal use?

I'd be happy to sell an image for full rights/outright ownership. You get to charge a WHOLE LOT more than $500. Seriously.

Full rights is the step before ownership.
That is, if you give them full rights what is left to you is the right to sell the ownership. Nothing more.
I doubt they know that.
If that is a big company, and I mean big( I don`t know what means ``fairly large``) they know it.
Price accordingly.

Like the others say you need more info from them before you talk $, like is it a trade ad or a consumer ad, is there anything extra special about the image or could they find a similar picture somewhere else. Is it direct with a company or is an ad agency involved? Does the photo have a limited shelf life, or is it a timeless image?
The reason they want full rights is either because they have no clue what that means and would or should cost or they do have a clue, and they want to pay a reasonable fee to be able to use and reuse the image s they please for other ads, posters, web sites, coffee mugs, bus signs, etc...
It's up to you to figure out which!
Unlimited use and unlimited time is an alternative to full rights buyout.
