So you are shooting full length on 18 foot wide white seamless. You want your key light close to subjects, high, and in the center. You are shooting telephoto from about 15 feet away. What do you use to get your light out there without getting the light stand in the shot? And not break your light stand of course.
I have a boom and a grip that can both almost do it, but the weight of the light with modifier is really flexing the light stand uncomfortably.
I video tape a cooking show and we made a stand out of black pipe that goes over the top of cooking table to hold lights and a small camera. We made a big upside down U and had the pipe screw into large plywood sheets with sandbags to hold it still. It's nice because we can break it down after.
Westcott boom arm, Avenger 12 foot ish light stand. I can find a more stout stand, but haven't seen a boom arm long enough to stay out of the frame in the scenario I mentioned. A background stand with some kind of clamp to hang the light in the middle sounds like a more stable setup. Haven't seen that done.
The Avenger D600 is a nice boom, and a little heavier duty than the Westcott boom you've got. You'd probably want a bigger stand, maybe something like the Manfrotto 126 series stands and a Junior to Baby adapter pin.
If you're looking for an all-in-one solution, the Avenger A4050CS boom stand is very well regarded. Very beefy, but can be used on location.
Thanks Sheldon and Henry. I'm liking the D600. I'd like to pair it with an Avenger century stand. The junior to baby adapter pin would not be needed correct?
You might want to consider a rolling stand to help you position your light. I used to use the D600 with a C-stand, but moving it even a few inches was really dicey. A roller stand really helps. You still need to bag the heck out of it, though.

Correct, only needed with a stand that has the Junior mount like the 126 series.
