Yep, seem to be lucky

Even with 2,7x crop, some subject isolation is possible
http://www.pbase.com/andrease/image/139026665/original.jpg

The 10-100mm lens seems to be quite resistant to flares and ghosting
http://www.pbase.com/andrease/image/139026669/original.jpg

The 10mm combined with deep FOV of the small sensor is quite practical

Nice! Color me impressed. Wasn't too sure about this one but looks like it's a very capable little setup.

It's not just the DOF in that last shot, it's also the DR. There's detail in the underside of that rotor as well as on the white tents in the background. I agree with Steve, I wasn't looking forward to much but it looks likes Nikon has far exceeded my expectations. Nice shots Andy.

Peace,

Todd

Andy, these photos are crap.

Didn't you read all those posts saying how useless this camera is... you know, the posts before anyone actually had the camera in there own hands and used it.

And by the way, it looks like it might be malfunctioning. You took a shot into the sun of some leaves and it didn't completely blow the highlights. Take it back.

I wonder if we will hear any more from those Canon trolls who were so prominent over here upon the cameras release.
Guys, you know who you are. Please stay away
Thanks Andreas. So much for the experts who were claiming that Nikon had lost the plot. I enjoyed them muchly

Tim

Tim, why didn't you just put up a big banner saying 'COME AND REPLY TO MY COMMENT CANON FANBOYS'. Just as effective

DR looks good for such a tiny sensor.

Andy, how responsive is the auto-focus on the J1?

Is your handling experience similar to this one?

Hi there.

I arrived tonight in Nairobi. Will transfer tomorrow to the Masai Mara and will probably not be online for a couple of days.

Please find below some evening shots taken today with the J1 and the 10mm pancake lens. Will potentially use the V1 tomorrow - the first time.

The 10-100mm PD lens is a positive surprise. Seems to be in the same ballpark than the AFS 18-200mm (DX) and better at the respective long end than the AFS 28-300mm on FX bodies.

Don't over-expect what the small sensor can deliver. Checked at pixel level, the DX bodies win hands down, but this misses the point of this little camera. The AF in low light seems to be as capable as the AF of the D5100 where it hits and miss the target - impressive vs. my other experiences with compacts like the P7000. (I don't have any Oly or Nex). Only tried the NEX-5 for some weeks, and based on a few shots the J1 is more versatile from operation speed and AF perspective. If images are scaled down to 1920x1200, they are usually impressive.

The small size allowed also other optimizations. I used the little camera with the pancake lens only on the tripod head, without the tripod attached. Was stable enough and easier to handle. Exposure correction and timer setup is quick.

The AF is convenient and fast. Like it.

These last images are stunning Andy... I start to change my mind about this project that initially infuriated me... (Nikon1)

Take a more laid back approach my friend

To conclude today: 2 images, one with ISO 100, one with ISO 1600. Basically out of the camera RAW, resized to 1920x1200, only thing i did in postprocessing: Setting default NR in CNX2 to "high quality", saved in JPEG

The AF catches immediately, no delay in this dim light.

Enjoy,
Andy

Really impressive Andy. I really wonder what "cookies" Nikon prepares for us in D400, D800 and D4... I'm afraid that some competitors will receive sooner or later a painful kick in the ass...

Found one more photo in 1920x1200

October 26th marks the national days in Austria. The military service is currently preparing their annual exhibition. Here one of the Black Hawks. Basically out of cam. Just resized the RAW and converted it to JPEG.

I've been playing with the V1 today. I really didn't expect much -- honestly I planned on taking a few dozen shots, calling it crap, and putting it away. Now I'm going to have to do some comparisons with the other mirrorless cameras. This really is pretty good.

As to handling and menus, etc. I'll admit I found it confusing for a second, but a few minutes scrolling through the menus had me feeling pretty comfortable.
