p.1 #1 · Mixing different strobes question

Hello all, I am fairly new to using flashes and have recently purchased the Nikon SB-700. I now see I can buy some LumoPro LP160 or vivitar 285hv for a heck of a lot cheaper than a set of SB-700. Can I mix these up and use them all together?

What exactly would I need? just some remote triggers?

Thank you for the help, Ive tried googling but cant seem to find anything, i must be missing something...

You just need a way to trigger the non-Nikon flash and then have to play with exposure values in Manual mode (which you want to shoot in anyway normally while doing flash exposures). I bought a couple of hotshoe triggers off ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/DSLRKIT-PT-16NE-16-Channels-Wireless-Radio-Flash-Trigger-Umbrella-Holder-/250898008987?pt=Camera_Flash_Accessories&hash=item3a6aafcb9b#ht_4542wt_973) And you should be able to plug a pc cable into your pc port of your camera while having your sb-700 on your camera hotshoe and away you go. I use a Canon 580EX and a Vivitar 285HV together all the time; I use a cheap optical slave to trigger the Vivitar, and use a long cord to connect the 580EX to my camera. The only "trick" is that the 580EX must be in Manual power-level mode so the camera doesn't trigger any metering pre-flashes, which would trigger the 285HV prematurely.

There are special optical slaves that can ignore pre-flashes, but I don't have any. Radio triggers would eliminate that problem, but I find that mixing TTL flash and manual flash can give inconsistant results, so I prefer manual flash power when using multiple lights.
