I came across this kit LINK I can't really seem to make them work right. Are they just a total waste of money or is it me.

Define work right. If they turn on they work. The rest is you. Of course with that amount of light you need a subject very close and a high ISO / low shutter to get any kind of DOF from the shot.
What are you trying to shoot.
