When I am drooling over the Canon 1D mark III and 1Ds mark II I keep noticing that people are putting small pieces of something over most of the seriel number. What are they doing when they do this? Thanks.
Privacy & security...that's all. Someone could use the s/n for some illicit purpose....who knows what..but some may feel that (in this day in age) it is better to be prudently cautious than not. I suppose one example might be that a person can insure a piece of equipment using photos and serial numbers lifted from the internet and then claim that it was all stolen. Then one day you send your lens into a service center and it comes up as a 'hot' lens and you find yourself needing to explain a whole lot to people in uniform!
