p.1 #1 · calumet genesis 200 2 light kit

Hi all,

I am very new to photography and do this strictly as a hobby. I shoot things like my family, sporting events and my prized possesion, a 1965 shelby 427 cobra replica. I am planning a shoot with my car at a local air museum (my gf runs the museum and is getting my car in) so I am in the market for some lighting.

I saw this set up on line and wanted to get some opinions. Any advice would be very very much appreciated. I have zero experience with off camera lighting and have no idea if this kit even comes with every thing that I would need or if there is anything more that I should purchase such as remote triggers etc.

I am shooting with a D7000. I have sb900 flash currently and several lens choices.

This is the kit I am reffering to:

Thank you all for any input you can offer.
Kevin

A single strobe, tripod, and a long exposure will yield you some great results.

Above is a shoot I did in a dark alley. See the lights above the car? Those are individual firings of the strobe as I walked around the car (strobe dialed down to low power and was elevated on a light stand, triggered by remote) ... to get rid of the lights get an exposure of the scene, front lit, and use that layer for the BG.

Good luck.

You could fire the flash with a cord, the on camera flash or sb900 unit or buy a remote which would fire your sb900 and one other of the units( 2 recieivers are standard). The 3rd would be fired from the flash but that would allow you to have the sb900 off camera. The rest really depends on the look you want and knowing how to use the equipment.

"have no idea if this kit even comes with every thing that I would need" if you dont know? Then how are we supposed to know what it is that you want?

The Calumet Genesis line is good. Slow on recycle times and modifiers are expensive. There are better solutions out there. Get either the Elinchrom or the new Paul C. Buff Einstein E640. along with the Vagabond Mini and the PLM... not much more you need... Ive got the Genesis 400 Softbox Kit, White Lightning Ultra 1200 and a Vagabond Mini

I've got that kit and am very happy with it. True, the recycle times are a bit slow, but I can live with it as a lot of what it do are product shots. The build quality is good in my opinion. I've added soft boxes am pleased with the results. They are a good value. Calumet has great customer service as well.

AHPZuazua,
I asked the question becuase as a I stated, I have zero experience with any off camera lighting. I figured with all the experienced photogs here, someone could take a look at the link and let me know if I were to purchase this kit, would be ready to shoot with it or if I would need to make an additional purchase such as remote triggers or cords of any kind. I am trying to see if this will fit into my budget or if I would end up having to spend more $ to be able to use the kit.

Thank you all for your responses.
