p.1 #1 · Helios 44-2 CLA

I think this is the ideal lens to learn lens construction on, it's cheap & it's simple.

This is a quick bunch of shots, so pardon the bad photography.

The first shot is not the same lens as those that follow, but is built the same.
***Mark orientation before taking anything apart***
The screws can become rusted, and weak, the screw head could break, turning a slot into a D, so be aware of that issue.

3 screws hold the focus ring, loosen those and it slides off.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6173/6187253303_84341d33dc_z.jpg

Turn the front end counter clockwise and the optical block and spacer are separated from the helicoid.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6155/6187775502_bb8903e263_z.jpg

3 screws hold the scale ring in place, but it does not need to be removed (I do in later shots).
3 screws hold the helicoid to the mount.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6151/6187775972_86f30a5ccc_z.jpg

1 guide screw removed allows the helicoid to be disassembled.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6172/6187776462_74cbcc5477_z.jpg

now clean with a solvent and brush, wash with soap and brush to remove any solvent that could break down the new lube.

Time to re-lube and assemble, I use lithium grease and a small art paint brush, just enough to coat the threads.
Edit: I stopped using Lithium grease, I then started to use "Orange Solid Oil" search for "TLNC 4" which works great, it's like a gel, the only issue with it is it causes more complicated helicoid designs(eg. FD, Minolta MC, Takumar...) to require more effort then I'd like, I then ordered some grease(#10) from micro-tools.com(can also get it at japan-hobby-tool.com) which works a whole lot better, effort is much reduced.

Now you put Humpty together again.
You know you got it right if the stop screw hits it's stop just before it bottoms out.

Ok, now re-lube the mount/helicoid assembly, the recess in the helicoid that the mount fits into, the mount, the part that fits in to the helicoid, and the inside groove that is where the guide screw slides, line up the guide screw and the grove and mate them, then lube the inside of the retaining ring, screw it down on the helicoid assembly, you want ittight enough that there is no play, but not too tight that it's too hard to turn the helicoid, you may feel tight spots where the set screws were before, you will need to go past 3-6 of those to get where you need to be, tighten the 3 screws to lock it together. you can check how smooth the helicoid is now, and wipe any excess lube off, leaving the helicoid thread as is.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6172/6187258469_b85acf8165_z.jpg

reverse the previous instructions to put it all together again.

Now about the optical block, I haven't attempted to clean the aperture assembly yet, as I haven't needed to as mine are clean and dry, but all you need to do is
set the aperture to it's smallest opening, remove the small screw that sits in the slot, don't forget to mark first, then there is a large head screw that needs to be backed out some, then you can unscrew the back end cover.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6151/6187493015_37030b197e_z.jpg

that will expose a small set screw that holds the aperture assembly to the front 1/3of the optical block assembly, the rear optics can also be removed.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6165/6188014086_877d7720d5_z.jpg

leaving the aperture by it's self, you should be able to rinse the whole thing in solvent if needed, you may want to add lube at this time to the aperture stops.

The rear element retainer didn't want to unscrew by hand so I didn't bother for these shots, but is easy to do.

I can probably tear apart, clean, lube and re-assemble a Helios in an hour now that I've done 3 of these.

Thank you!
Yes, those Helios 44 lenses are great :-)
Bought my fourth one for 8 Euro with a Zenit camera. I like to make expermients with those lenses very much.

does anyone happen to know how to adjust the 40-2 (85/1.5) focus ring?
mine is awful tight. i read it was easy to adjust, but can't find any mention beyond that.

I'd love to see the same CLA on the 40-2.

well done!

Thanks, I haven't seen the 40's internals, but I have a feeling it's also as easy to do, if the focus ring is tight, it could be that the lube is dried out, or dirt has made it's way into the helicoid, in which case a CLA is what it needs.
this link may help

Any updated thoughts on the best lubricant to use, especially in cold climates? I've a few lenses that get stiff in the cold and have been thinking of doing a CLA...

I've used this grease in a number of lenses, it's very lite, gives a very smooth easy to turn action, you don't need much, I use a small artist brush to paint it on in the direction of the threads. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Helioid-Grease-for-Camera-lens-10-15ml-Made-in-Japan-/252052032724

There are a range of thicker greases... I also just bought some of this to try out. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Helioid-Grease-for-Camera-lens-30-15ml-Made-in-Japan-/271953149662

I just bought this stuff a few months ago, I have only used it once, seems good, not as easy to turn as the stuff in the first link, but it does look promising for lenses that have apertures or optics very close to their helicoids. like myRokkor 58/1.2, this will be the 3rd time I've had to clean the aperture, I'll be using this stuff this time: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HELIMAX-XP-Camera-Telescope-Optical-Instrument-Focusing-Helicoid-Grease-w-PTFE-/271194713421
