I have a couple viv 285's and am looking to get half dozen or so more small lights like that but would really like something with a bit more choices of manual settings.
also need a sync port and zoom head,
I love how easy it is to change settings on my viv's and would like something similar that is just as quick.

Yours are fine they have a low, safe trigger voltage. My old 285's have a high trigger voltage and have to be used with a Safe Synch or optical slave.
The great thing about sb-28's is a) they're small..... b) they have the pc port built in, that works two ways.... It'll fire the flash via a trigger, as well as fire a trigger when the cameras hot shoe fires the flash... So you can shoot on cam and off cam flash at the same time....especially handy when using a body with no pc jack.... Which brings me to c) it works great as an on camera flash... Doesnt do ttl, auto zoom, or af assist, but it has a manual mode and auto thryistor mode, and it bounces and swivels, which a 285 hv does not!!!

I thought sb28 doesn't have built in optical slave. Or maybe only works for Nikon body? I have to use additional optical slave on Canon body.
The lighting specialist at a local camera store recommended the Luma Pros to our camera club last week. Manual controls. $160 each - get three for the price of one 580.
