Neat shot Scott. Looks like something out of a Stephen King story.
I lean towards the color version. It seems to have a little more depth, and the area around the "mouth" shows up better.
I have taken many shots like this and seen many posted on the FM forums like this. Mine never look interesting, and the ones I see are generally a bit "blah" as well. They just don't capture MY interest.
This one, however, succeeds! The light, framing, and subtle texture all work together to give me cause to actually look at it longer than the ones I take! I prefer the color version for the exact reasons John mentions.
The color is appealing. I quite like the pastels on the left. But, I'd suggest they plead the case for for more sharpness in the shade on the left, too.

Thanks John.
The facial features are more dominant once processed and were not a conscious choice. But I can add this to my collection of Halloween-themed images now that I have a selection of disturbing tree faces.
I think you are right about the color.

Yeah, I like those pastels as well. I'll see what playing with the sharpness does.
Resembles what I imagine one might come across while scuba diving?
Tinkered but came up empty although I am curious about the blue that appears on the LHS.
BTW, great interview
Bob
Thanks. Blue sky, blue water, pinkish hues in the rocks. This was taken along Jordan Pond, Acadia NP. At this time of year the colors of Acadia are blue, brown, green and pink! (OK, some gray in the granites as well).
More of Jordan Pond for critique coming.
And thanks for taking the time to read the interviews.
