p.1 #1 · Tip Your Wedding Photographer!!

Receiving a tip is not something I expect but it is something I respond very well to. I realize that the client has already spend $1k+ on your services, hundreds on the dj, make up artist, hair stylist and the caterers. Receiving $40+ as a tip even though it's such a small amount makes you feels great at the end of the event.

It makes me feel more motivated to finish up their wedding photos faster. Even though I know there is no way to finish up their wedding photos any faster than the next client, it does make you feel better about it.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on tipping.

Receiving a tip is of course always nice. However it is getting out of hand. Most restaurants now expect 18%. It seems you have to tip everybody for doing their job. If you go to dinner with 6 people or more the restaurant automatically adds a gratuity on, which then becomes a surcharge or a tax. A tip or gratuity should be a thank you for an exceptional job and should not be expected. However many employers know their employees receive tips so they adjust their salary accordingly.

I didn't know this was standard practice. Do you tip your plumber or handyman as well?

I tip for exceptional service and really don't like the way many restaurants build it in -- I've seen poor service too many times when it was automatic. The person who cuts my hair gets a big tip around Christmas but I try to make it a habit to tell people 'nice job' when they do well. The handy man I use has seen me 'round up' the checks I write him more than once.
Best,
Andy

$1000+? Good grief I'd want more than a tip if that's all I was pulling in for a wedding.

Exactly, professionals don't get tipped.

People you tip: waiters, massage therapists, cab drivers, bellhops

People you don't tip: Electricians, doctors, engineers, plumbers

Which group do you want to be classified under?

My wife is a professional bartender/ master mixoligist at a very respected hotel chain she generally pulls in $200.00-250.00 a night in tips on a regular night up to double that for a good night 4-5 nights a month or so. She and I are both okay with her being tipped and I and others consider her a Pro.
I had been a contractor for 17 years, on occasion I had been tipped either by bonus (early finish) or just plain tipped for a great job, so Im not sure if your list is complete or correct. Just sayin. Im not to proud to take a tip exspecially in this econmy.

As mentioned above, people who generally receive tips are folks who collect a salary at minimum wage. I worked as a waiter in college and it was wonderful going home with cash in my pocket, but for what I make, I don't consider tips appropriate.

I can see if a photographer has been asked to do a few extras not agreed upon in advance, then a tip for the extra time seems like a sensible thing to do.

If she's a bartender, then tips are expected.

I tip my bartender, but if he starts calling himself a "professional master mixoligist specializing in alcohol delivery systems " I may reconsider.....

I've received I guess you can say a "tip" in any trade I work in. I'm a photographer, was a painter and "handy man" prior. The "tip" would be, say your bill was 395.37 after tax. You gave me 400 and said keep it. Not a big bonus, but a nice way for you to say an extra thanks (though not needed).

I tip my wait staff based upon service. If you've got a problem with that, get a different job. Don't like my opinion? Don't read it. That's how I feel about it. If you're too busy texting on your blackberry to refill my water, then I'm going to be too busy doing something other than tipping you.

I'm not looking for "yes master, right away master". I'm just looking for a couple times during my meal, just glance over. If my drink is low, make a mental note to give me a refill this lifetime. Or, if I order something, say boneless wings from Applebees on Saturday (this actually just happened). Don't have a different waiter/ress THROW them on my table as she's walking by, and go "boneless wings" SLAM!

Or what about when you're out at a resturant, and a hostess seats you, one lady takes your drink order, a guy brings your food, a different person refills your drinks, and a person brings your check? Who gets the tip?

The tipping in America is a joke. I see facebook statuses of people who are waiters/resses thinking that it's a damn entitlement. No, it's not anything. A tip is for exceptional service. It's for being a pleasing server, or at the very minimum, someone who isn't a problem.

My wife nurses my son. In PA the law is, you can nurse without a cover and it's okay. My wife brings a cover anyway. It's just like wearing clothes. Well, this last Saturday at Applebees, everything was fine, until my wife started to nurse my son. The waitress was pointing and gawking, while speaking with other customers. The wait staff avoided us for the rest of our meal. I received no refills on my water, until my check was brought out.

That waitress probably felt she deserved a tip.

I know, the employer gives you a shitty wage because you get tips. I also know that about all of the people who receive tips, do not claim them on their taxes. So in town, we've got wait staff, who only claim electronic tips, and qualify for cash assistant and welfare. So they get tax free money, they get my tip money, my tax dollars, and a wage...

I've only ever walked away from a table 2 times and didn't tip. Even if I've just gotten coffee and said keep the change, only 2 times was my service so appaling that I didn't tip. (the applebees incident above wasn't one of them).

Tipping is absurd, and why should we support an industry that intentionally underpays its staff?

I always DO tip, but it bugs me, especially when they pre-add the tip to the bill and then leave a blank line for "additional tip" on that damn receipt.

Here's a tip - don't add the tip to my bill if you want more than 18%.

What a bunch of angry cynics.

What group do I want to be a part of?
The group of professionals who do their jobs well, are recognized for doing it well, get referrals from their clients resulting in new clients, and who get tips and drinks while working!

This summer I shot a wedding where three of the guys where actors, the best man is a very recognizable A-list celebrity, and a few of the guests as well. In the end, after having a fine meal and drinks, we both received generous tips.

I don't shoot loads of weddings, usually 10-13 a year, and I get tips about every 3rd to 5th wedding. I do not expect it. Frequently the tips come from fathers, uncles, or grand parents along with a thank you and telling us we were loads of fun to work with.

The last wedding I shot I did not get a tip, however, when I went to the bride and groom to let them know I was leaving they insisted I put my gear in the car and come back to the reception and enjoy the party. I declined, preferred to be at home with my wife.

I don't understand why anyone would tip a photographer. I tip service people ( waiters, cab drivers etc... ) who make minimum wages and who hustle their butts off to ensure my experience is exceptional. A photographer getting thousands for the nightnjust does not qualify for extra tip money.

Personally, I think I would be a little ashamed to take a tip...and possibly give it to the newly weds to help them with their new start in life.

If the guy doing the work is not the company owner and he does a good job I will tip him. I don't tip the owner. FWIW in all my years shooting & assisting weddings I don't recall ever getting tipped. YMMV.

I tip service people ( waiters, cab drivers etc... ) who make minimum wages...

FWIW, waiters get paid far less than minimum wage and it's expected tips will make up the difference. Remember Mr Pink from Reservoir Dogs? "I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job."

When waiters/waitresses are concerned, he was WAY out of line. :-)

I have been a full-time wedding photographer for about 15 years now and and shot many wedding.
I can't recall a tip from any of my client. I may have not done a good job or after the total bill of 1K ++
no need to tip the photographer.
