p.1 #1 · Rokkor Holy Trinity

Its finally happened: I now have my Rokkor "dream set".

MC Rokkor 21/2.8, MC Rokkor 35/1.8, and the MC Rokkor PG 58/1.2

I converted the 58/1.2 a few years ago now. I then purchased the 21/2.8 but ran into some issues doing the conversion myself. I put this project away for a long time. I then recently got the 35/1.8. Jim Buchanan did the EOS conversions on the 21 and 35 and they just arrived on my doorstep.

The conversions on the 21 and 35 look really clean. The focus action on all three lenses is excellent. I have yet to try some tests but I have the whole weekend to play...

Congratulations!

I love my 21/2.8 and 35/1.8; really miss my 58/1.2, though...

Post some stuff up when you get a chance.

I have a whole series of MC and MD Rokkor lenses from my Minolta XK days. How and where does one convert these to Canon EOS?

Harry, each lens conversion is different. My view is that this whole enterprise is only worth it for the select "rock stars" in the Rokkor lineup...

Thanks Kyle! I have been enjoying your Rokkor pics.

I am really excited. This quest has been a long time coming. Opening the box today felt like my birthday! I plan on using these lenses for both stills and video. The long, smooth focus action on these lenses are great for DLSR video.

Kyle, what are doing for lens hoods for the 21 & 35?

The build quality on the 21/2.8 is amazing. Its heavy, solid, tight and very smooth...

that's what I'd pick as a holy trinity of rokkors too.

the 35/1.8 and 21/2.8 have dedicated hoods, btw. not too easy to find but they are out there. I need to convert my 21 someday or have Jim do it.

Ed, you might remember my thread on the 21 from way back? Jim did a great job on the conversion.

I will post some shots soon. I have never seen the Minolta 20mm but this 21mm Rokkor is wonderfully built...

These are the Rokk's I'm looking at when I get some spending money to go with my 58/1.2.

Wish I had $700 to grab it, it does seem over-priced compared to the newer versions, is it?
Edit:
Now that I've seen a few more, it is over priced, by double.

Has anyone used these?
Are the slower(28,35) brothers/sisters better?

i've always heard that the 28/2 (which i have) is better than the 28/2.5 and that the 35/2.8 is sharper than the 35/1.8, but the 28/2 is the only one i've actually shot with.

But you have no 85/1.7? No 100/2? No 135/2?

21/2.8 is an entirely different beast to the 20/2.8, a much nicer lens to look at atleast. Are you going to use these much then, or just sit back and admire them? I could quite happily do the latter as they're very nice . Shame about the mirror issues on the 5D though with the 58/1.2, you'd have a perfect set otherwise ;-)

I have the 35 f/1.8, the 58 f/1.2, the 400 APO f/5.6, and I recently got the 28 f/2, which is on it's way to Jim's to be converted. I also have the 24 f/2.8, 45 f/2, 50 f/1.4, 100 f/2.5, and 200 f/4, that I use on film. My 35 f/1.8 was absolutely fabulous on a crop camera, but I can only focus to about 10 feet on the 5D without hitting the mirror, and I simply could not be happier with my 58 f/1.2 and 400 f/5.6. I think I will like the 28 f/2 as well from all the pictures I have seen around here with it. I still hope to add the 135 f/2 someday as well, then I would think of my Minolta trinity as 28 f/2; 58 f/1.2, and 135 f/2.

I don't have too many samples yet as I just got it earlier this year and have quite a few files to process, but I will try to find a few new ones and post them in the next day or two.

In the mean time here are some from the Rokkor telephoto thread:

This one shows more what the lens can do. I love how it handled the light in this shot:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/954105/0#9475083

In these the light was terrible and I had to turn up the ISO quite a bit on my 50D--not a good practice--and trying not to turn the ISO up even further there is some camera shake. They are cropped a fair bit too. So these aren't the best examples:

I had the MD 35/1.8, MC 58/1.2, MC & MD 85/1.7 (the MC is my most favorite), MC 100/2 (second favorite) and recently the "wow" MD 200/2.8 (non Rokkor though)

... and last night I lose the auction for MD 135/2 on eBay ... I gave up .. the price was too high, though I think its normal for a rare sought-after lens .... EUR 726 ..
