I made some experiments today with a tiny (9mm length) Jumping Spider.

The first is a regular shot with the 105mm f/2.8 micro AIS + PN-11 tube:

Jumping spider with 105mm f/2.8 micro + PN11 tube by labecoaves, on Flickr
D7000 + PN-11 tube +105mm f/2.8 micro AIS .
ISO 400, f/5.6 at 1/640s.

The second is the same combo as above + TC201, resulting in a "210mm f/5.6 micro" - lots of CA I managed to eliminate at View NX2

D7000 + PN-11 tube + TC201 + 105mm f/2.8 micro AIS (=210mm f/5.6).
ISO 400, f/11(5.6) at 1/100s.

And the third was a surprise: the 400mm f/5.6 EDIF AI + 120.5mm of tubes (PN-11 + entire Vivitar set) + Canon 500D close up filter:

Jumping spider with 400mm f/5.6 + tubes + 500D close up filter by labecoaves, on Flickr

First experiment of using a Canon 500D close up filter with Nikkor 400mm f/5.6 EDIF AI + tubes.
The spider has a length of just 9mm. Distance was ~80cm.
D7000 + 120.5mm tubes + 400mm f/5.6 (set at MFD - 4m) + 500D filter. This combo was supported by a tripod and I used a remote cable with mirror lock up.
ISO 800, f/16 at 1/60s.

Even at f/16 the DOF is really thin.

These are spectacular Jose. I'm glad you chose to add them to this thread. I've thought many times when seeing your work on the Manual Focus Nikon Glass thread that it belongs here as well. You do some magical work with tubes and converters on a variety of lenses. These really knock me out!

I love narrow focal plane with tubes. Some folks prefer to see everything sharp but I like shots like this Chris. Had I known about tubes when I owned the EF 300 f/4L IS I might not have sold all my Canon gear... It is a great lens. You did well!

And what extension tube were you using with that lens? Inquiring minds...

I have a new, classic 105 2.5 of a different sort (Vivitar Series 1 Macro), here paired with the pk-13:

Wonderful shot Howard. This lens has an excellent reputation. I love the soft bokeh in the background. Very nice.

Thanks, Curtis. I tried a Nikon 105 2.5 Ais but just could not focus with it (except with Live View) for some strange reason. No such problems with the Vivitar though -- and the build and the feel is superb.

Nice image Howard, that Vivitar 105 macro is a killer lens in good hands.

Thanks for the words Samy.

Some additional extreme macro experiments with a caterpillar I have found yesterday.

Two shots with the "poor man 200mm micro"

The catterpillar's head is just ~3mm diameter and body is ~5mm wide.

Focusing at these extreme magnifications is best using Live View and the focusing rail is almost mandatory.

Feeding on fern leaves with "poor man 200mm micro":

D7000 + 105mm f/2.8 micro AIS + TC201 (= 210mm f/5.6) + PN-11 tube + Nissin macroflash + focusing rail + tripod. ISO 400, f/22(11) at 1/60s. ~30% crop.

Feet detail (same combo):

Some experimental combos with MF 105/2.8 ais Micro, MF 180/2.8 ED ais + extension tubes + TC20EIII + macroflash. Head and wing details of a moth.
Lot of fun doing these shots yesterday afternoon.

Head detail with the "poor man" Micro Nikkor 200mm:

Moth's head detail with "poor man" 200mm micro Nikkor by labecoaves, on Flickr

D7000 + TC20EIII + 12mm Vivitar tube + micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 AIS [=210mm f/5.6] + Nissin macroflash, hand held, ISO 320, f/32 at 1/60s.
A windowsill helped in stabilization of this combo. Magnification at MFD (~43cm) was 1.22 x (1.5 DX sensor) = 1.83x.

Upper wing detail also with "poor man" Micro Nikkor 200mm:

Moth's upper wing detail with "poor man" 200mm micro Nikkor by labecoaves, on Flickr

D7000 + TC20EIII + 12mm Vivitar tube + micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 AIS [=210mm f/5.6] + Nissin macroflash, hand held, ISO 100, f/32 at 1/60s.
A windowsill helped in stabilization of this combo. Magnification at MFD (~43cm) was 1.22 x (1.5 DX sensor) = 1.83x.

Bottom wing detail with the "360mm/5.6" micro Nikkor:

D7000 + TC20EIII + PN-11 tube + Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 ED AIS [=360mm f/5.6] + Nissin macroflash, hand held, ISO 400, f/16 at 1/60s.
A windowsill helped in stabilization of this combo. Magnification at MFD (~99cm) was 0.84x (1.5 DX sensor) = 1.26x.

Just for reference this is the entire moth, no tube used though:

Terrific details Jose. Some of those look like intricately woven fabric. Just the fabric of nature..

Here's some shots from today. Nikon 180 2.8 AIS with 1 X PN-11, 2 X PK-13 = 107.5mm extension tubes. Focus with just slliding the camera-lens combo back and forth and lighting is two generic studio lights - one behind and one to the right of the subject, and on-camera SB800.
