Hi all,
Been getting this flare pattern with my 50mm Zeiss MP (which I love very much since i got in a few weeks back). I see this flare pattern mostly at f2 and if the strong light is bordered by a dark shape (in this case, it's the trees). Anything to worry about? Is my lens within specifications?
Admittedly i should not have been using f2 at that light setting but I can pretty much reproduce this flare pattern quite on cue (strong light coming through the edge of a dark shape, f2).
That's nice flare - what kind of flare were you looking to get?
If your shooting into the sun - and there are many great shots in that direction - look closely in your viewfinder - you can see the flare. Move the camera / lens around to see if you can remove, minimize or move it into an area of the image that you want it in and still keep the scene you want. There is a "flare appreciation" post on this "Alt Forum" - you should post this one there!
Edit: If you can somewhat manage the location of the flare - the cloning / repair tool can sometime remove parts of it.

I would definitely not recommend that with an f/2 lens - you can destroy your eyesight. Live view is perfectly safe though.

Sorry I should have been a little less vague. The image presented is not the example of what was trying to be conveyed - in fact the photographer probably was "blinded". Many a photo / image was made long before live-view - I don't have it on a 5D and probably wouldn't use it in that kind of shot. The risk and warning regarding eye damage is usually associated to using a longer telephoto - magnifying the light source.
Shooting into the sun - controlling flare and other artifacts does take some technique and practice - let's add caution - sometimes a few bad photos help with the learning curve. jmo
Exposure to the sensor - 1/10 to 1/500th at f13 give or take - 1/1000 @ f2 - guessing at the f2. The sensor will be just fine or mine would have been burned out a long time ago.

I'd say the opposite. The image is projected on the viewfinder screen, not your eyes retina. With live view though, you are continiously projecting the light on the sensor over a long time.
My 50MP flare is very similar to posted above. I have used the 21, 25, 28, 35, both 50s and the 100...basically all but the 18 and 85. The 50 MP may flare second most to the 21 in my experience. And not just shooting into the sun, but night shooting with street lights as well. In fact, it is very frustrating the amount of flare that I am seeing with my 50 MP when shooting at night. I will post images tonight showing the flare. The image below had about, no joke, 20 little flare spots that I had to clean up in pp. They were tiny dots that just drive me nuts. The 50 1.4 was far better in flare control in my opinion.
Should this shot produce a ton of flare I don't think so, but it did
Tx! Bothers me a little , the amount of flare. The 60 AFS I still have does not do this, but of course it's a f2,8 lens. Tx again for the feedback, much appreciated

If you were using a filter, then yeah it should. One flare spot for each street light, forming symmetrical pairs with respect to the image center. Can you show the original image?
Yeah Ryan - I wouldn't think that you would get much flare with the 50MP - especailly under those conditions. I have yet to use my 50MP at night though... Could you post a pic of the original version?
I did not/do not use filters with the ZF glass. I'm not sure if I have that original, but I shot some more this morning where I was looking on the lcd and saw more flare like I was getting with that shot so will post at least that one later tonight
Please tell me if anyone else has this issue. I am thinking about sending in but don't know if this is a design flaw or my specific lens. It is as clean as possible on the glass, so nothing obvious.
Here it is - isn't this ridiculous crop of flare area
Will try to reproduce the effect later today when I get some time. Can I trouble you to do the same with shots in daylight shooting against the sun (but with the sun partially blocked out by a dark shape (like the silhouette of a building or treetops).
Hmm...just saw this daytime shot I took and sure enough, look above the duck with the mohawk - a ring almost of little flare dots. In addition, when looking large you can see a larger flare that gets lost in the water below the duck with the mohawk
Edit: Just saw there were 3 ducks with mohawks look at the one at the bottom of the frame.
