Is there any (free) software that will allow me to set up a slideshow on a 2nd monitor/projector and display the image number?
Canon's DPP will display the image number, but only on the primary monitor and with other info (star rating etc). I'd like to have it on the second monitor with just the image number, running a second (printing) program on the primary monitor
I know Compupic from Photodex will do it - they used to have a cheaper home version, but all I see is Pro now for $50. It can toggle the file name in the corner of the pic. The nice thing about Compupic is it's simplicity - select a folder, start slideshow - that's it.
Are you looking to display photos to potential customers? With the image number for them to write down to possibly order?
Personally, I've never seen a sales model working off a slideshow work very well.
Think about what you are presenting. To have a photo up in a slide for long enough that a customer sees it and likes it AND pays attention to the number long enough to write the whole thing down (if they're ready) is going to take... 5-6 seconds (at least)
So that leaves you displaying about 10 pictures per minute. Depending on your type of photos, your crowd and how many photos you have to show, you have to wonder how many people will be stand around long enough to see a photo they like - passively, without control of what they are looking at.
But if you're showing a dedicated slideshow to one customer, it could work out well.
I agree it's not the best option, but currently it's my only option...
I'm covering a fashion show/party so wanted to make regular dumps of images onto 2 pcs, one running a slideshow on a projector, and one for printing/editing.
Ideally though I would like some reduncancy incase a PC goes down...
Do you have any better ideas based on what I've got?
Your workflow needs to be determined by your customer flow.
For your event, I'm ignorant of what that might be. But if the flow is too much - then you may work well to show the images to everybody - with web site and/or contact information on the screen and get a biz card in everybody's hands.
Which is very hard for me to say - because I know that onsite sales is close to 10x more powerful than online only. But it depends on your staffing and again: customer flow. If you can only capture a few people per hour by yourself, then you may be better off broadcasting to all and getting more response online.
I just don't know how many shots you'll have - directed at how many people. And then how long will you have to spend with and individual and/or group to secure their order, etc..
Maybe broadcasting the the crowd on the projector and then having them come see you for specific orders on the second box where you can spend more time with them. The issue arises if it all works too well - and you have 20 people at one time that want to come see you and you are too busy working with one grandmother who wants 100 pix and has the money for it - you then alienate the rest of the crowd.
Hammy - Thanks, there's alot to work out still! This event is fairly small (less than 100 people) so it's kind of a practice run... I have 4 photographers and a girl to run the sales desk. I'll offer prints on site, and take orders on site for delivery later, and online sales so I think I should be covered...
Luketrot - Thanks, I'll check it out $12 is cheaper than $50
