p.1 #1 · Help with automating photo placement

Ok guys and gals, get your thinking caps on, mines fried. I Have some customers who want to do before and after photo montages of their clients. That part didn't seem like a problem. What they are looking for is templates though that they can drag and drop their photos and or a text box to that will automatically resize the pictures and then allow them to print them. Any ideas? Would this be custom programming or is their a software option already in existence?

Thanks in advance.

Robin

I think there are some things like that in Photoshop Elements. I watched a video about a year ago and they talked about templates for making books and stuff. I'm sure there are some free programs out there, but I can't think of any.

Not sure I understand, but it sounds a lot like the "Booksmart" book making software from Blurb. The software is free, so you could download and try.

Comes with hundreds of templates or you can make your own. Text boxes too. Drag and drop images into the templates and images are auto resized to fit the template. You can overide with a zoom.

Now that software is all about uploading the result and printing books. But there is a soft proof feature that lets you print yourself. Or, I think it creates PDF output which could be printed.

What you talking about is a Photo Collage. There are many low cost programs that specialize in Photo Collages. If you have Photoshop Collages are quite easy to make with it. In fact I included in my Image Visualization Package what I called a Photo Collage Toolkit which consist of four simples rules to use when creating Collage templates and a set of Photoshop action to use while developing templates and to populate templates once developed. Here is a link to examples images my Image Visualization Package can produce collage examples are near the bottom http://mouseprints.net/old/dpr/Examples/
Here is a collage of the after 911. Images are placed in with the action using Photoshop "Place" feature so users can size and position images. Images are masked with a layer mask so any part of the image that falls outside its place is cropped off by this layer mask.

So I think the collage is close to what I am looking for. What I want to do is incorporate an option for clients in our company's management software that allows them to drag 6-8 photos to a collage like template and automatically re sizes the pictures for them and then allows them to print. How would I go about doing this. I know several programs integrate with others such as Lightroom and Photoshop. What would be my best bet here? I'm looking for something that makes it easy for my customers, but also doesn't add to much financially to their bill. Any ideas past and present are appreciated.

Thanks

Robin

We do a office management program. The client does before and after pictures of their patient before and after treatment. If possible I would like to link our software in some way to another program that will allow them to drag stored photos to a collage type system with minimal effort ( I know, for us photographers, resizing etc is not a big deal, but the clients would rather treat there patients then spend extra time with the photos). Want to thank all you for your feedback, I am beginning to suspect this is a long term project, however, after 10 months unemployed, its nice to be back working again. Hope you all are having a great start to the new year, and please keep the ideas coming!

Before you try to do anything like that you better contact your organization IT department. I'm sure there will be legal and security issues that would need be addressed before you would be allowed to install new programs on your companies machine for your clients use.

Yeah, its a corroboration effort between programmer, boss, it etc. Basically we are trying to extend the software's usefulness by attaching the imaging software. Lots of hurdles, right now just trying to figure out the technical issues, but thanks for the advice.
