during yesterdays shoot the mirror in my recently acquired 5D came loose from the
holding plate. It looks like it can be slid back in, but there is no way for me to do it.
Is this something a local shop can fix, or is it going to Jamestown? this makes the 5th
peice of Canon gear sent in for repair this year. no dropped or abuse either, just
gear failing.

Pack it up so no more damage can be done and call canon, It's a known issue and canon has said it will repair all 5D mirror issues free. It's on the website too:

I am getting ready to pick up a used 5D...is there a visual way to tell whether the fix has been performed without sending it in?
Thanks
Brian

Yes, it's on the Canon website, look for 5D under the support section

I may have answered my question with a little further searching:

Canon actually emailed me about the mirror fix, but I registered the camera when I bought it.

there are two thin strips added next to the larger thing that is visible in the picture above. That big three layered plastic looking thing is on all 5D mirrors.

Same thing happened to me. Canon's a 40min drive from me in Irvine, CA so I just dropped it off on 10/26/09. It was ready for pickup on 10/28/09.

See, the 5D is just so powerful, that it shoots the mirror off!

I'll have to look if they did this to my camera...which went in for a cleaning in Irvine not too long ago.

Thanks all for the info.

I think you mean Jamesburg.

If you send it to Jamestown, the battery will slowly starve to death over the winter and when help finally arrives there will be nothing left of the settlement- er camera.

I just looked at my camera and it appears to already have the reinforcement pictured. Maybe they did that when it was last in for service and I just didn't notice. <shrug>

Hardly. It was slow and cheap. They cut corners everywhere.

Quiet you I say! Haha. Yeah, I know it doesn't have all the bells and frills of the 1 series, but it's the best bang for the buck full-frame you can get, and frills aside, it's IQ is stellar.

I had two 1Ds MK II bodies before the 5D even existed. They are both still working fine and nothing fell apart.
