p.1 #6 · anybody here ever use the 800mm 5.6 Ai-s?
shooting buddy shot with the 800 Sigma .. took terrific shots .. sold it and bought a Canon 600 VR recently .. happier cuz it's smaller to shoot from vehicle, carry on trails, more PRO overall .. other was like a telephone pole stickin' out the window / you didn't carry it far and like all telephotos .. it takes technique .....

yeah or this 800 for $3500

just picked up a 400mm 3.5 for $825 here and already have a 2x tc i got for $80, so i already have 800mm @ f7.0 for $900 shot on crop bodies so it's equiv to 1200mm, was wondering the optical quality of this 800 though, it's a beauty and for a telephoto, really cheap, being that the game now is all about AF-S and high apertures, i can live without both for what i've payed.

I seen several post on nature form, the poster using Nikon 800 F5.6 on an EOS body. The results were outstanding. Bird was a Krestal, not sure of poster. I also cant remember if it was the AIs model.

i believe the only version of this lens released was Ai-S, i'm pretty sure they weren't any Ai models, though that does not effect the lens's optical qulaity whatsoever,to be honest i really don't know the difference between the 2, i do know there was a cheaper version of the 800mm put out though an 800mm f/8.0.

Maybe get the TC-16A for your 300/2.8 AI-s?
It turns it into a 480mm f/4.5 with limited autofocus.. You'll have to modify the contacts of the TC in order for it to AF, though, unless you have a D2-series body (I read that it works with the D2H and D2X.. Not sure about the "s" versions, but it should work I'm thinking). And you can use the No-CPU Data and input it as 500mm f/4.5.. Just a suggestion in case it hasn't passed your mind yet.

Well, I'd be awesome if my AIS could now AF!!! Wow
Okay well I was being sarcastic. If you were to look at my profile, you would see that I do have a D2H and D2Xs So the non-CPU data is all well and good. I was just thinking about which TC I would require to get it to 600 f/5.6, which will still work with the rangefinder.

I have an 800/5.6 AIS that I bought a few months back. I haven't had a chance to use it much, but I'm pleased with the little bit I have used it. I use it on my D3, and image quality (when I manage to hit the focus right :-) is excellent. This is with the 1.4x TC: http://gallery.buntonstudios.com/photos/648663113_eyKvm-M.jpg
