Just some fun shots from last weekend during a visit with some friends. D90's AF and ISO performance along with the IQ of the 70-300VR have been pleasing me lately. All below shot at ISO 1000:
Love the first two shots. Not sure about the dog. Looks over-cooked in post, but that's just opinion and style.
I agree with you about the 70-300vr. It's what has kept me from investing in a 70-200 f/2.8 for the past two years. I'm not saying the 70-300 is just as good. I'm saying it's not enough behind the pro-lens to make the 70-200 a high priority for me. You do it justice especially the portrait of the little boy. I'd ease a bit on the saturation, though.
I find swing shots challenging. What AF settings did you use and were you "pushing" too? What was your strategy?
I find my 70-300vr very useful too.
D90 was set to AF-C and no i fortunately didn't have to push too she had her daddy and her brother for that. pushing her really wouldn't have caused too much of a problem though. what's great is that most of the shots came out pretty good if not great! i actually had to decide between my favorite 4 of that sequence to post here.

again, just fun shots. dog picture is probably a little over the top but i just quickly 'spit' that one out of LR late last night with the Direct Positive preset. my monitor needs to be re-calibrated(it's been reminding me for a week now and i have ignored) and it probably shows a bit. but i know for a fact i didn't touch the saturation in LR nor is it cranked in my camera. i really never ever touch saturation anymore in PP or in camera. may just be the combination of Vibrance and the white balance chosen............and again the need to do my monthly monitor calibration.
