So, doable I know and for some might be highly valuable.
Idea: a notification system for lenses.
It would require a selection list in the new post section, and it would also require a notification subscription system and the manual selection by users but i think it could work.
If only for the most popular lenses which people are commonly looking to buy, no need to get into a massive list of every lens ever.
It would help a lot in times when you're constantly hitting the site for a specific lens only to find one was on the site a couple hours ago but you missed it because you were out to dinner and now it's sold. With the email notifications, this wouldn't happen.

Who decides which lenses are included? I think whenever you make a set of inclusionary/disclusionary rules, you end up creating animosity.

How so? This would ONLY be true if you were the only one with the e-mail notification. If everyone else has notification too, you would now have created an instantaneous bidding war by alerting EVERYONE to the item you covet. I suppose it would be good (and only good) for the seller (IF your lens is lucky enough to be on the 'inclusionary' selection list) It doesn't seem to me that the philosophy of the B&S board is to turn it to a bidding/auction site (for 'select' lenses) or to give an advantage to some buyers over others (which goes back to my first point about fostering animosity)

Well, since you ask...I hate it. It's just a terrible idea...sorry!
It is so painful when a lens you've been looking for that is selling for a killer price disappears from the board before you even knew it was listed... And yet, it is so delicious to be the one who happens upon that lens just as its dropped on the board and who grabs it before anyone else gets a chance. It has happened to me both ways and yes, it is fun to get a great deal AND they do on occasion appear on the board.
Frankly, I like the board operating exactly as it is. The "early bird" gets the worm just about every time. That is fine with me. The search feature works well, making it easy to find what you're looking for. If you miss the great deals, at least you'll find what you want and begin negotiating with the seller. Sounds pretty good to me.
The old adage is "if it ain't broken, don't fix it." The Buy and Sell board has gone through its growing pains and is doing very well now... it simply "ain't broke."
