I was in the little village of Faucigny in the Haut Savoie French countryside near Geneva which put on a little pagent yesterday inviting the public to come see their heritage Chateau.
Unfortunately there were only a couple of walls left and the guides were urging us to use our imagination a lot to visualise that might have been there. You gotta give them full marks for trying.
And so my attention wandered a bit and I spotted these butterflies flying around next to the remains of the Chateau so I went to investigate and got some pics of an Old World or Common Swallowtail Butterfly and the Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly.
Both were a first for me and I shot them with my 70-200 2.8 handheld.
1 First to set the scene, here is a pic of the walls of the Chateau taken from the road below. Not so much but still a few standing
2 The villagers did dress up in some appropriate gear all right. This guy was taking a bit of a rest so I asked him if he was not hot under the sun in the metal helmet. So he said no, there is a wollen hat under it to keep out the heat from the sun but he had been out the night before and had had a few drinks too many and was finding it tough going.
he looks like a Frenchmen taking his "job" seriously....
Would not like to mess with his weapon that's for sure.
Do you know that somewhere in France they're actually building a replica of a Medieval castle following plans of old using methods of the time & building materials of the time. Sounds like a pretty neat project which will probably finish in about 50 + years.

# 3 & 4 are my favorites.
Lil
Hi Lil,
Actually I persuaded him to let me try out his weapon I thought I might be able to use it as a monopod but it was a tad on the heavy side
Would not like to be on the receiving side of a blow from that thing.
As to the French replica project, I had not heard about it but am sure your time schedule for completionis a bit on the short side
Thanks for you comments and picks Lil.
Martin
Of course he was out drinking the night before Martin and he probably lost the bet and that is why he ended up in that outfit Though if he were man enough to swing that weapon that would certainly leave a mark or two
Now, onto the softer side of things..............the butterflies are marvelous and beautiful! A great informative story and some great shots buddy
Sorry Martin, I thought I caught this post earlier.
Oh I do love the hangover in armor look!! LMFAO, that is too funny. So glad you posted that. I do like the Euro feel you give to some posts Martin. Such as "I was in the little village of Faucigny in the Haut Savoie French countryside near Geneva which put on a little pagent". That we don't have here in the USA, such is part of the charm/fascination those of us in the US have for Europe. You really have to love the internet
Oh yeah you did post some flutterybies. Sweet work on them buddy
