p.1 #1 · Using a 540EZ and a 580EX n tandem

I am thinking of using these two units in tandem with remote triggers such as PWs or a cheaper alternative. I never sold my 540EZ and realize now I might be able to use that unit in manual mode with remote triggers. The only downside i see is the recyclng time on the 540EZ is slow...like 4-5 seconds or more. The residual value on the 540EZ is at best $100.

Thoughts?

Yeah, the 540EZ makes a great off camera.... Use recyclable batteries and keep the power down off full grunt and the recycle time is great.

That is unless you want to sell it to me cheap... then it's a bad bad flash and I would be happy to take if off your hands

It has an annoying habit of turning itself off if you wait too long between flashes, otherwise it works well.

^ I have two of them, but consider them totally unusable for remote flash work. If you don't fire them off every 90? sec's they switch to sleep mode, and need manual intervention before they can be fired again.

Not sure if EZ flashes are the same, but the technique to prevent EX flashes from sleeping is to place them in SLAVE mode and press the mode button for 2 sec. until the M indicator blinks. That prevents sleep and allows them to be fired manually via the center pin of a generic PC - hot shoe extender.

Both of my 540EZ's have a 3 way switch.... off/on with power save and just plain on, so they never go to sleep with the switch in the right position.

The older 430EZ certainly turns off and cannot be disabled and I THINK the 420EZ is the same but I recall something about it having a longer time before sleeping.

I forgot to report back.

Yes, my 540EZ never goes to sleep and chuck's tip above works well on the 580EX--otherwise it will go to sleep.
