p.1 #1 · Leica R lens on the 5D MKII

Any lucky souls get to try out the Leica R lenses on the 5D2? I am curious about the mirror clearance, wonder if lenses that worked with the 5D still work with the new 5D?

It will vary by individual body. I think you'll be in the situation, like with the 5D, that an individual lens may be fine on your 5DII but cause issues on your buddy's. So yes, you could buy a 5DII and find that the lens(es) that cleared your 5D mirror will now no longer clear your 5DII's.

When a lens is blocking the mirror, does it cause any physical damage or is it just blocked and you get something like an err 99 but it would work again with a normal lens?

I've always wondered why you could not put a 12mm extension ring on the camera first to clear the mirror or would that lose infinity focus?

I've hit my mirror on the back of plenty of lenses and had no problems yet. However, I have heard isolated reports of 5D mirrors coming unglued on impact. I think it's safe to have happen a few times, but test your lenses for mirror interference at home and not out in the field where you will lose a whole day of shooting if something does go wrong.

Yes, you will lose infinity focus. But you will also fix any mirror clearance problems. This is a good option for using old macro lenses, where infinity focus is often not a priority anyway.

I am worried that mirror-hits could have an impact on the very finely adjusted relationship between the mirror, sensor and focusing screen, putting the MF or even the AF focusing system out by a little bit. Anybody else worried about this?

If the mirror falls off like that on my 5DII, I wonder if the warranty will cover it, let's say I have no idea how it manages to fall off on its own

I'm so glad I'm happy with Canon's lenses. Dang the things you worry about!

The reports about the mirrors coming unglued in 5D's are not necessarily due to impact (in fact, I don't remember hearing of a mirror falling off due to impact) but rather the adhesive used was bad or failed. Most cases seem to be in areas of high humidity and temperature. I'm in Florida and never had an issue with my 5D so I think these incidents must be fairly rare.

The mirror impacts twice during every exposure - the top of the mirror box and the return rests so it's pretty robust. Until someone can actualy buy a 5DII and test it we will have to wait and see.
