p.1 #1 · TS-E 24 mm lens with 1.4x extender and tubes?
Hello,
Hopefully some you you guys can help me out here. I am interested in getting the Canon TS-E 24 mm f3.5L lens. Right now I am still using an APS-C camera body, but I will upgrade to full-frame soon. I want to use this lens for architectural photography as well as for close-up photographies. I am aware that a TS-E lens with a longer focal length is more suitable especially for close-up photographies, but I want to choose the most flexible tilt-shift lens possible for many sort of photographies.
And here is my question: I read that you can use the Canon 1.4x extender with the TS-E 24 mm lens, converting it to a 34 mm lens. If I additionally attach Kenko tubes, I might get very decent macro capabilities with tilt-shift features, right?
Does anybody has photos with combinations of TS-E lenses (especially the 24 mm one) with the 1.4x extender alone and/or attached tubes?

I just tried putting my 1.4x extender on the TS-E 45. It worked pretty well. MFD was about twelve inches (maybe less). Can't see why it wouldn't work with tubes too.

Great response, thanks! Can you just do one or two photos of something in this MFD and post it here?

One thing to remember is that the TCs are optically designed to work with lenses 70mm and greater. It won't work as well as the focal length gets wider. Even though you might be able to connect/mate these together, I would think this would be far from ideal.

Exactly! That's the reason why I would like to see some photos in this combination. Personally I think the only reason why Canon states this is that only EF lenses with a focal length of 70 mm and higher fit directly on the Canon extender. It might probably not have any optical reason!

It isn't a Canon thing. It is an optical thing. Please see the Kenko which can be attached to any EF (not EF-S) lens. They have no reason for making the statement except for the fact that it will optically compromise the lens.

Teleconverters are best used with longer telephoto lenses and are not recommended for lenses wider than 50mm, e.g. 28-105mm.
With this said, it is obviously up to you. You might consider the results acceptable for you.
The Kenko extender is differently designed and it has no part standing out of the inner extension ring. Therefore the Kenko extender can fit to all kind of lenses. It might be differently designed in its optics than the Canon extender. Sorry, but I am only convinced that you would see a decreased photo quality in the combination of TS-E 24 and Canon 1.4 extender if I see it on a photo somewhere. I think optically and in the lens physics there is no drawback to use this combination.
Near bottom talks about extension tubes. All the T/S lenses take the 1.4 TC with little change to image quality. I think I may test the tubes and tc tomorrow on my 45 and 90, but still prefer to use the 180 and 100 for macros. I suspect (guessing) that the max possible focus area will be reduced with the tubes. Live View would help here for sure.

Yes, I read this before I posted here, but thanks for mentioning it here. I am curious what you will come up with when examining the combinations. Please let me know!

I will. I'm retired so I'm always looking for something to experiment with. I've used the T/S lens some for Orchid photography to get the whole line of flowers in focus which works very well. Never did the tubes though. I'll post one from each lens here on your thread.

I don't have any example of using the tubes with my 45TS but I did experiment with them. Unfortunately I can't remember much so I'll try tomorrow and report back.
I have tried the 45 with the Canon 1.4x and had very good results. I rented the 24 but did not try the converter with it unfortunately.
About a year ago or so there was a thread here about the TS lenses and there was at least one poster who had regularly used both the 1.4x and the 2.0x with the 24. He posted shots with it--if you search you may find it.

Thanks for the hint - I tried twice now to find any former post describing this combination earlier including photo examples. There are many posts about TS-E lenses, and if this was mentioned as part of a different topic thread I certainly won't find it. But good to hear that you also got good results with the TS-E 45 mm and the extenders!

This would be especially of interest to me since I did quite a lot of orchid photographies myself, but mostly using a 105 mm macro lens. Thanks a lot for finding my post of interest - I am very curious to see some of your trial shots posted here!

Here are two with the TSe-45. First one was taken at f2.8 at an approx. 35 to 40 degrees angle to the rule. Second at f/8 taken at a 25 to 30 degrees angle to the rule. MAX focus distance was about 4-5 inches from the front lens, could not get any further.

If you are looking at the TSe-24, really not much sense in me doing the 90. I obviously saw some gain in distance with this set up but the max focusing distance is quite small but useful for a flower, not a string of Orchids. With a bit more practice I suspect someone could squeeze a bit more out of it. I will check out the 90. It should give me more focus distance at least.
Again, with some practice, I probably could get more out of it. Seemed like the 90 was better for macro but it's a good jewelery lens without the gizmos attached in it's own right.

I am new to the world of tilt-shift photography, but I have experimented with my 45mm, a 1.4 extender and the Kenko extension tubes. I don't have any 100% crops to share, but I was very pleased with the image quality. Click here to see pics of aspen leaves shot with this setup. For scale, the leaf in the first image was only about 1.25" in width.

The Canon Life-Size Converter (for the 50mm f2.5 macro) works well with the TS-E lenses, and it essentially combines a teleconverter with extension, so it would probably work reasonably well for what you're trying to do.
I think you would get better results with a longer focal length than the 24mm TS-E, though.
