So i figured i'd wet my beak with a new body.
Having shot with my trusty 1D Mark II (no plan on getting rid of anytime soon)
And the 40D, i figured i'd try something new and went ahead and pre-ordered the Mark II from a local camera shop.
The sales associate told me there is quite a long list of pre-orders before mine
How many here have pre-ordered.
Let's keep this thread on a positive note and avoid the "why would you need 21.1MP and video" type posts.
Me too (just one for now). Couldn't find a grip for it for sale yet, but that hopefully will be fairly easy to find.
Now I need to figure out some other things:
1. How will my fairly new PC handle a 21MP raw file?
2. When will Adobe release compatible ACR for the 5DII (will it work with Lightroom 2, or will I need to upgrade my CS2 to CS4??)
3. What size CF cards am I going to need (and will a 8gb extreme III be good enough to handle the videos, too)
im # 42 as of yesterday at my local Calumet in nyc. I didnt preorder it, Im just on the written waitlist and didnt give them my CC info or pre payment; so I might not have first priority.
Well, I've changed my mind about this camera. I'm still disappointed about the AF hardware not being updated, but with Digic IV AF processing, I've concluded from anecdotal evidence on the web that the 5DMkII will be significantly better at low light AF and marginally better for day light AF in all focusing modes.
Therefore, I've pre-ordered two of them. One is from Adorama, but I suspect they play games with pre-order, and they refuse to tell me where I'm at in the queue. And another from a local dealer who is charging $300 more than Canon list, but I'm in the top 10 waiting.
I suspect that some, if not more, dealers will charge more than Canon list. If you see Canon's pricing policy on the USA announcement, they leave the door open to dealers.
From speaking to various dealers the 5DMkII is going to be a hit for PJs, paparazzi, p0rn photographers and those who want some video without carrying two cameras.

I called and emailed Adorama and they do not give out the information. B&H and Amazon in this respect are more honest. I suspect this is because a significant number of people will cancel before it starts shipping since you can do this via email and electronically. A local dealer will generally have more determined clientele.
I pre-ordered on Amazon, Wed AM, a half-day after the announcement. A few hours after the order, I noticed Amazon wasn't taking orders (although they are now). So I assume they were swamped and there might even be thousands in line before me.
