p.1 #1 · How well does the Nikon MB-D10 Battery Grip Handle Abuses?

How well can the grip handles drops and or bumps? Is this thing built like a tank? Of course I'm not asking if this grip can handle something extreme like throwing it against the wall, but rather I'm asking if the grip can handle a 2-3 meter drop to the ground and still function properly.

If in a padded bag perhaps, don't know of any body or grip made that would handle the drop your suggesting.

It's a piece of electronics.

It probably has a better shot than most of handling a 3 meter drop since its complexity is fairly minimal and it is made of rubber-coated magnesium - but if you're looking at buying camera equipment with the requirement that it handle ten foot drops, I think you might need another hobby...

Kidding aside, that big a drop is no joke and you simply can't predict whether or not it - or really any piece of electronics unless specifically designed for shock resistance - will function when falling from that height. If it lands in the soft grass, sure. If it hits anything hard, though, it's just going to depend on how lucky you are that day.

I would be pretty confident that it would still work, however, that is a BIG drop. The build quality is excellent, but theres no need to test it on purpose ;-)

I think it's safer to live life assuming that all your electronic toys will break upon 10' drops.

Now will the camera be attached when you are dropping this battery grip?

I am sure it's survival abilities go up exponentially without having a camera body attached to it... but with a camera... I would be more worried about the camera then the battery grip...

It's extremely well-built, and feels really sturdy. As noted, rubber-coated magnesium is not your daddy's plastic toy.

That being said, are you really, really tall? Or are you holding the camera over a fence to get shots of your naked neighbors suntanning? In any case, I can only get my camera and grip to 3 meters high by raising my arms as far as they'll go and standing on tip-toes. So my camera and grip will likely never be that far above ground, much less get dropped from that height.

I was just asking out of curiosity. I don't intend to drop my equipment to find out!

Btw, I was just asking about the grip and not about the camera with grip attached. Is the MB-D10 built like a tank?

The grip itself is pretty tough. It's mostly magnesium alloy, but the top plate (the part that mates with the camera base) is made of quality plastic. It's just like the D300 in overall build quality, which is very solid.

I would have no problem using the MB-D10 as a weapon to hurt someone trying to steal my camera :-D.

I know someone who already did!

Build quality is the same as the rest of the D300... excellent and tough.
