Buy and Sell: On
p.1 #1 · How will you assume?

Hope this is the right place to ask such kind of questions...

Long story in short, lately I sold a lens to a fellow FMer. As usual, the transaction was easy and smooth, until the buyer complained that the lens didn't come with the original box. Here was my ads:

"For sale is a mint xxxxxxxxxxxx lens. The lens comes with both front and rear caps, and the manual."

I know it is my bad to not say "there is no box". However, I do want to know, from your perspective, will you assume the lens will be coming with the original box? I'm asking because I tend to post what I have, rather than what is missing, since I might forget to mention something missing. If my habit is a problem I might need to change a little bit.

Again, thank you for your time!

Boxes are a nice to have, but unless you charged full price or real close for it, not a necessity. You didn't list it. If you said everything it came with when you bought it, yes, he has a point. You said caps and manual real specific. Personally no box listed would be PM question if I was a potential buyer. I see your ad and can guess box ain't coming. If a deal breaker, I would have PM'd you before sale. If not a deal breaker, ehh, just a box.

How was the price if I may ask? I am guessing you got a flipper here and he's pissed because he'll lose profit flipping the lens sans a box lol. My boxes get thrown in a closet, eventually crushed sometimes lol...Papers go in a folder in a drawer, and the lens gets used on the camera. Box least of my worries, may just be me though

Actually I would kind of assume that I would get the box because I always keep mine. That's just me though, I certainly wouldn't complain if I didn't get one.

You didn't state it wasn't coming with a roast dinner or a Boeing 747 either, perhaps they should be complaining about that too. I think if it's not stated as coming with it you shouldn't expect to get it. You were selling a lens not a lens and a box.

I've bought and sold a lot of gear here, and from your description, there's no way I would have expected the box (or anything else you didn't mention) to be included.

If the buyer was that concerned about getting the box he should have ask, otherwise it's on him not you.

Agree. If it's not included in the description, it's not included in the sale.

The box was not listed among the accessories to the lens so there is no basis for the complaint. Next thing you know, they'll want the cellophane cover, too. Just remind him that the lens condition was as described in a nice way.

I had the reverse happened to me. I bought a lens on the *bay where the seller listed "both original Pentax front and rear caps" on the lens. The "original Pentax" front cap ended up being a random rear cap with "Pentax" on it that happened to fit the front of the lens. He tried to weasel his way out of it but ended up sending me a legitimate front cap on his own expense.

Your situation is clearly not your problem.

You know the saying about assuming... personally, I've learned in my 63 years this time around to be on the lookout (within myself) for unconscious assumptions - those are the ones that are potentially troublesome. My motto might be "Don't assume; ascertain."

I bought a lens that showed a box, manual and packing materials, etc. in the picture, which was small and compressed. I assumed that the caps would be included but I was wrong , and according to the picture the seller was right. There was no mention about caps in the description either. Again, instead of assuming, I should have asked.

Thanks for all the great comments. I actually feel better now

I absolutely believe that the buyer just has some unconscious assumptions, as Ernie said. Sometimes I bought something just to find the purchase was not exactly what I had expected, not because the description was not accurate, but because I had a perception.
