B-Day/X-mas is comming and my lens list keeps growing:
rig so far:
40D with 24-105L IS
looking at getting:
EF85mm.1.8 for low light
EF100mm or EFS60mm macro low light/closeup
EF 70-200mm 2.8L IS
also looking at a grip, but its not a prime need right now, ill try to find a used one.
and a wide angle...just not sure what to look at for the crop body, so suggestions would really be appreciated, obviously something wider than the crop 24mm i get already. I want to be able to take building/landscape shots that get distorted.
the canon 10-22 is reputedly an excellent lens.
17-55 is excellent, but too much overlap with your 24-70 I think.
Either the 14mm or 15mm fisheyes are viable for you as well. Well, one's a fish eye.
Hi,
I have a 40D and maybe I can help you some. I would for sure get the 85mm f/1.8. You can't go wrong with that lens. It is my favorite. I also have the 70-200 non IS. I don't regret buying the non IS at all, plus I saved alot of money. I just finished about a month's worth of research on buying a new wide angle lens. I narrowed it down to a tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and a tamron 17-50 f2.8. I picked the tamron because I felt I could get more use out of the 17-50 range being a portrait potog and photojournalist. I shoot alot of sports also, so the 17-50 will work better for that I think. If money is not an issue, stay with canon. You will get a better built product. The canon 16-35mm f/2.8 is great. Also the canon 10-22 is a really wide landscape lens. Also you may look for a fisheye. I wish that I could justify buying one. Look at the tokina 10-17 fish, it looks like a fun lens. Good luck.
just got a Tokina 12-24 which is very nice. and has a good usable range for me.
you cant really go wrong with any of the main players.
Canon 10-22 great lens (some have said they keep a crop just to use it)
Sigma 10-20 good IQ but a bit slower
Tok 12-24 Good IQ and constant f4
Tok 11-16 great IQ and 2.8 but short on range.
Tamron are just about to replace their UW with a 10-24 (I think) but you can never tell how long it will take them to actually release it.
If you're looking at an UWA that has very good distortion control for taking buildings, check out the Sigma 12-24. Yes, its a FF lens, it has excellent distortion control.
Take a look at the Canoon 17-40, which I use on my 40D all the time. The 10-22 is obviously a lot wider, but I decided on the 17-40 to hedge my bets (had a pro friend urging me to get a 5D, which I still like a lot), but even if that isn't a concern for you, the 17-40 is still a great lens for the price.
The two Tokina lens' are great. I have the 12-24 and love it, and others that have the 11-16 say it is just a good or better than the 12-24. You cant go wrong with either of them
I absolutely loved the 10-22. It was very sharp, controlled flare remarkably well given how wide it is and produced great colors. If you are sure that you will not require a lens for 1.3 crop factor of full frame, it will be very hard to beat the performance of this lens.
The Sigma 12-24 is an amazing bargain. It is a rectilinear lens and is surprisingly good for how wide it is. Flare is a bit more of a problem than with the 10-22, albeit on a FF body versus the 10-22's 1.6 CF body performance (so we are not comparing apples to apples).
The EF 16-35 mkII is also a great performer and I own it for when I need the speed. However, I would exchange it in a heartbeat for a 14 2.8 mkII (still on my wish list). Keep in mind that the 16-35 costs more than twice as much as the other two lenses.
I wish that I was at home so that I could look on my HD to find examples from each lens, taken wide open. Afterall, a picture says a thousand words.
If you don't need the 2.8 aperature, the Sigma is quite amazing. So, my recommendation is as follows:
If you are staying with the CF, the 10-22 would be very hard to beat. I don't know how much money the Tokina and Tamron lenses cost, but the Canon is simply hard to beat at it's price.
If you may be going FF or 1.3 CF in the future, you may want to invest in the Sigma 12-24 as it is a stellar performer and a real steal at it's current price.

+1. Great lens for the price (if you like the focal length range), and it'll make the leap to FF with you should you decide to go that route.

+2. Very solid color/contrast/build. Hard to go wrong.
The Canon 10-22 or the Tokina 12-24 are what I'd suggest. The 10-22 might be too wide, and is reputed to be somewhat soft at 10mm. I found the Tokina sharp and solidly built.
Canon EF 17-40mm, f/4L, EF-s 10-22mm, or maybe both? You'll likely get most of your money back on the EF-s zoom if you decide on FF in the furure and/or you'll be ready if you only get the EF "L" zoom. Note that the EF-s 10-22 zoom on a 40D approximates FOV of the 16-35mm L on FF so you may want that instead of the EF 17-40 L tho it's a lot more bucks!
I was checking out the wide angles myself. But, I hate having too many lenses, and also wanted a backup body. So, I finally succumbed to my long-time desire to try a Sony DSC-R1 and just bought one off eBay. With the live cashback, the final price is $450 + $15 shipping. Let's see how that goes.
