Hello,
Since the 50 1.4 lens has been released, I thought I would leave this thread for the Sigma debate between the two. You can post the pictures if you have them or post the Nikkor 50 1.4 pictures. Make sure you label the pictures so we know the difference.
I think this will help people that are on the fence about the Sigma or the Nikon.
And for AF. Many people have said that the AF isn't that impressive as other AF-S lenses. I haven't used it yet but I think the AF in my 50 1.8 is plenty for what I need it for.
And for m_appeal. I feel the image is slighty blurry and the color balance isn't the greatest. Not an image to show off the Sigma. The images I posted above truly shine with Sigma performance.
Excellent MTF figures on both charts for the Sigma. Many people have claimed that for Sigma's 50 the sharpness at lower apertures is stunning. Out performs all of the lenses nowadays before the new Nikon. I think thats the most important aspect since I am buying this 50mm lens to be used wide open.
Yeah, it is not a sharp shot but I don't mind... I can't figure out what happened with the focus (it was on the lower part of nose). I didn't change WB, so skin doesn't look too great either... I didn't post this shot for sharpness, but more for bokeh.
If you're close enough, and wide enough, it's possible to have both eyes OOF when focusing on the tip of the nose because the DOF is just too shallow. She could also simply have moved back an inch or two... easy to do in her position.
I just returned my Sigma 50mm f/1.4. It doesn't work with Nikon's NX 2. Pictures taken in a raw format can't be open with the program. I talked to Nikon and Sigma guys about it. A tech support rep from Sigma asked me to send the lens in for a firmware upgrade. (he said he checked with Japan and apparently this is a known issue etc.)
I received the lens a couple of days ago with new firmware; it didn't work. The lens has still problems and causes the Nikon's Capture NX 2 to freeze. (when software tries to open and load the picture....)
It looks like the lens stores some metadata that the Capture NX program doesn't understand and it freezes.
Jpegs and Tiffs don't experience this problem. If you take pictures in these two formats, you won't have any problems.

Yeah, there's been problems with RAW files from that lens and Capture NX... You can search... there is a discussion about it at the Nikonians forum... not sure if it's ever been resolved.
