hey all I'm lens poor, I have a few older lenses from a verity of manufactures but only one ef lens I will be getting the 17-40l and the 70-200 f4 is as soon as budget allows but for now I'm stuck. my question to you is this
1 dose anyone use len addaptors for manual focus lenses of another brand ie. Nikon to cannon m-42 screw mounts to canon and Olympus to canon.
if so how do they work for you and do they give the correct focal point.
2 where did you buy them and how much did you spend
in a perfect world I would have lots of fast primes and a few zooms but money is tight and I need to make due with what I have. (some of the lenses I have are quite nice 200 f2.8 nikor and 50 f 1.4 nikor and a 3rd party 500mm to name a few)
any other comments you would have are happily taken
thx
I bought a Nikon to Canon EF adapter on ebay for about $25.00 shipped. It works great.
Of course, there is no electrical connection, so everything is manual.
The older Nikkor lenses have manual aperture settings and nice long throw focus rings, and I set my Canon to aperture priority, and it meters the light and adjusts shutter speed for a perfect exposure.
Too bad you can't do it as nicely with the old Canon FD lenses.
Not all bodies meter correctly and this can be a big pain.

If you could, the prices wouldn't be as attractive as they are... so would you still want to be using FD or the then similarly priced Nikon lenses... mostly I would go for the Nikons...
E-Bay $35 +$5 shipping from HK for OM adapter. It has the chip and contacts that give you AF assist so the the red AF square and green dot light up when you are in focus. Works fine
Patrick, be nice to the noob. The fella's only got 14 posts!
OP - In the Alt Gear forum you'll find more than you ever wanted to know about using old lenses on DSLR via adapters. -Even the inexpensive glassf like Olympus-Zuiko.
Ben, I use adapters for Olympus to EOS (Fotodiox Pro), M42 to EOS (I can't find the last store but I've used "ericccc1004" off of Ebay - another good supplier is something like HappypageHK or something similar) and Pentax K to EOS. Do a search under "XXX to EOS adapter" and you'll find lots of choices. I typically use a mid-priced adapter; not the cheapest or most expensive. You need an adapter that's machined to close tolerances and perfectly flat.
One decision you need to make is whether or not you want an adapter with "focus confirmation". In theory when you achieve focus the camera will let you know by lighting up the appropriate focus point in the viewfinder. It doesn't seem to help me, but others swear by it. One advantage of adapters with electronics is that some suppliers can code in the EXIF data so you'll know what lens you used (but not the f-stop as that's manual).
There are alot of deals out there for MF lenses if you'll spend the time looking. Many lenses available that simply have to Canon counterpart due to either pricing or lens characteristics. Olympus lenses are in great demand as none seem to have any issues with EOS cameras; their wide angle lenses especially well thought of. Carl Zeiss lenses have almost a cult following but I've avoided them to date as I'm afraid I'd like them too much!
You can have metering issues as mentioned above, but it's second nature for me to check to histogram and adjust as required. I've found specific lenses usually require about the same EC for most shots and I'll adjust as soon as I put the lens on my camera.
Good luck. As Cableaddict mentioned above there are many people that live for alternative glass. I bought my first MF lens a couple of years ago and now use these lenses for about 50% of my photos.
I guess I could have worded it nicer. I would say the best way is not even to search the forums, just find the "Alternative Glass/Image Threads". I believe they are on number three now. You can find all three threads and see images taken with hundreds of different lenses on almost any camera. Best shopping guide I've seen!
