Hi Folks,
Could anyone offer suggestions for land or seascape locations in or around Savannah? Will be traveling there soon and I would like to use my time as productively as possible. All responses will be appreciated very muck!
Thanks,
Jim Allison

Jim: Savannah has a historic seaport/old town area that's a must for tourists and certainly photographers. It's gotten kind of honkey-tonk over the years, but there's still a lot to see and do that's interesting. It's located at the river's edge. There's a long walkway alongside the river that takes you past all the sights, including some pretty magnificent schooners that are often docked there.
But, when all is said and done, I think the most spectacular thing about Savannah is the old homes and mansions. They are located throughout the palisades just above the old seaport district, accessible via a long climb up steps that are located at various points along the seaport walkway. I'd say spend an afternoon or two sightseeing and photographing these incredible residences. They are unique and captivating.
Wish I could offer more. I haven't been to Savannah in quite a while and have forgotten much of what else is there. But the areas I've mentioned should keep you pretty busy!
Hi Steve,
Thanks very much for the info. Sounds like fun. Do you know anything about a marsh area and old plantation homes? Very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Jim

Jim: sorry, no I don't. But I'm sure as soon as you settle in there, someone local can guide you to that area and those homes. Savannah is a small place, really, so you shouldn't have much of a problem traveling about from one location to another. Enjoy...
Like Steve said, the historical part of Savannah is fairly small. It's all on the North side of town by the Savannah River. The further South you go is newer residential areas. I'd also suggest a trip East from downtown to Tybee Island on the Atlantic coast. There's an old lighthouse there and you pass Ft Pulaski, many marshes and the Intercoastal Waterway along the way.
Have fun and enjoy your visit and the food.
Since I haven't been there in over 10 years I'm sure things have changed a lot. Definitely do the Historic District and Tybee Island and you really need to hit River St too. Lots of shops and restaurants, various ships going up and down the river with the tide and there are usually some interesting ships and boats docked along the river. I would always have lunch or dinner at the River House there - great seafood.
