I had the chance to use 5D recently and it felt 'plasticy' compared to my 10D. Did Canon want to make a 'statement' when it designed the 10D and over engineer it? I have the 1V and the two bodies feel compatible in terms of build quality..however.. my ancient T90s feel as tough as old boots by comparison...
I've had all the xxD's from the 10 through 50, plus a 5D. All have the same build quality, but what I liked best (still have my 10D, BTW) was the 10D's grip over the 20/30D. They fixed that with the 40/50D, though. Now, as far as the battery grips go, the 10D and 5D are by far the best.

in no way is the 10D superior to the 5D in terms of build quality. You prolly got a knock-off 5D if your "10" feels better.
I would say they are equivalent at best

I've had the D30, D60, 10D (still have it as converted IR), 20D--and have had the 5D for almost 3 years (haven't had an xsD body). I would say the 10D and 5D are very equivalent in build quality also. I generally have to look at the flash on the 10D to tell the difference when I pick them up. The 20D was smaller--I don't remember build quality but it just had a different 'hand' to it primarily because of size IMO. I have never even considered that the 5D was 'plastic-y' and that's after shooting with it almost every day for almost 3 years.
Regardless--this just seems a trivial topic. The 5D has been out over 3 years. The 10D is long gone for most--and the 5D has proven itself over and over, well used and abused by many.

I agree with the original poster, and it's surprising to me that no one else has chimed in with a similar view of the difference in "feel" between these two cameras. This is not the same as comparing "build QUALITY." Both cameras are well-built. The 5D is certainly well-built. It just doesn't FEEL as though it is.
I owned the 10D and D60 (another solid-feeling camera). I've owned the 5D for a couple of years (as well as a 1D and 1Ds). The 10D always seemed to me to have a more solid feel than my 5D. The 5D is more like the 20D and 30D ... "plasticky" and rather "thin" feeling. The 40D broke away from this trend and returned this model line to a substance and feel more like the 10D. The 5D's battery grip ... although made of sturdy magnesium ... never felt to me as solid as the battery grip of the 10D.
I also thought that the 10D shutter sound was significantly quieter and softer than the shutter sound of my 5D.
I own the 10D and the 30D, and I find the build quality equal. The 10D does have a nicer finger grip (like the 40D and 50D), and it's heavier and larger, which I think is what you are mistaking for build quality. In actual build, though I find them the same. Neither body can flex, both have solid action, and very nice feel. Both have full magnesium alloy bodies (except for the CF door and battery door which are plastic on both.) I do notice the extra weight of the 10D, though. If I've been shooting with my 30D all day, then I pick up the 10D, my first thought is usually "man this is a dense camera." It's only a 3 oz. difference, but it's noticeable.

I've been told that the difference in shutter sound between the 10D and 5D has a great deal to do with the difference in size of the mirror. Seems reasonable to me--and yes, the 10D has a lovely quiet but solid sound to the shutter.
I happened to have my 5D and 10D in proximity to each other so handled them again--I'm at a loss about the difference. I do have an RRS L bracket on the 5D so that does give it a bit more substantial feeling and I didn't take it off to try, but still--it really makes little difference about the comparison of 5D to 10D really--they have both been replaced generationally.

This is true. The difference in sound has largely to do with the size of the mirror, but there are other factors, including the overall density of the camera and the thickness of materials in the chamber. The 1Ds is also a full frame camera, but it's quieter than the full frame 5D. It's also a different sound entirely.

Well, the 10D is still quieter than any other XXD camera. The 20D is the loudest, and while the 30D is quieter than the 20D, it's still nowhere near as quiet as my 10D. The 10D is similar in noise to the original DRebel, which also had a very quiet shutter.
I've had the 10D, 20D, 30D and 40D and I really haven't noticed any major build quality differences among the four. I prefer the hand hold of the 40D over the other three, though.
Now, regarding the BG-- series grips, the 10D's grip smokes the crappy grips for the 20D-50D. It was totally solid. The new grips are cheap plastic.
My point in starting this (and it is something referred to elsewhere on the web) that Canon used the 10D as a testbed product (like they did the T90) and that subsequently they lowered their 'spec' on the non 1D** range. I have just bought a 40D which seems quite comparable to the 10D in many respects.....but I have borrowed a 5D and 20D in the past and I would consider the 10D to be the tougher (heavier?) body......Which makes me wonder if other elements of the 10D are beefed up as well. I have lost count of the long studio shoots I have done with this camera..which is still performing faultlessly.
I'd be interested to hear if there is any way of finding out the exposure numbers on this model....
