I just ordered a demo D2X from Adorama, and want a small, low profile flash for fill, and around the house snapshots. The SB-400 is the right size, is it compatable?
If so, would it serve as a slave to a SB-800 or SB-900?
It is not part of the Nikon CLS. If you intend sophisticated flash later then get the 800 or 900. Otherwise, the 600 is a good starting point to upgrade later. One issue with teh D2x flash is the Commander Mode, you will need a SB-800 or SB-900, or the Commander thing.
Otherwise, the SB-400 is a wonderful little standalone flash unit
Excellent, thank you Joe. I want the smallest flash possible, which seems like the SB-400, that would be compatible. Then, I will put a remote flash system together.
"This Speedlight, which features the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS), provides i-TTL flash operations in combination with CLS-compatible cameras. Manual mode is also available with the D40 camera. Cameras compatible D2-Series, D200, D80*, D70-Series*, D50*, D40*, F6, with CLS COOLPIX 8400, COOLPIX 8800*
*When using the SB-400 with these cameras, the SB-400 must be turned on."
I have one, and it's a nice simple little flash, works with the SC-17 very nicely.
it is compatible with Creatile Lighting System Cameras. I was incorrect in stating that it was not part of CLS, which assumes that it can at a minimum perform slave flash functions, similar to the SB-600. In addition, the unit does do i-TTL. However, it does not do Commander nor Slave functions.
I did read the User Manual, very informative
I have spoken with others who have this unit and they were very pleased with it. The unit also tilts, which would be a reason for my purchase of it. Otherwise, a bump in ISO would extend the range of the built in flash in the D300 to many feet to redefine portraits photography at a distance

I appreciate your help.

I actually keep an sb-400 in my car "just in case"... works pretty well for some fill on the D2x but don't count on it if your wanting any more than that out of it.... you could use it in the house but I would STRONGLY recommend making sure to always bounce or go off camera with it... as far as using it with the 800 or 900, "yes" but you need to set them in SU-4 mode and manually adjust the levels... but you likely already know that
