p.1 #1 · Bolsa Chica Killdeer - Part 2

Here's more of the images I took of the Bolsa Chica Killdeer family before the opportunity to record the entire egg hatching series were lost to us.
#1 While we're waiting for the other eggs to hatch, can you tell me how I got here?

#2 Pleeeeeez, can you tell me? Huh, huh? Ple-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-z?

#3 Huh? So, he got up here like this .....................

#4 Then he got like this? .............................. Then, Dad did what!!!!!!

#5 OK. I think you can stop now. I think you told me more than I wanted to know.

#6 Psssst. Hey sis, come over here. You're never going to believe this .....

#7 First, let me make sure that no one is watching.

#8 ........ then Dad went like this. I'm telling you. That's what mom told me!

#9 I couldn't believe it either! Just don't tell anyone else. I don't think that anyone would believe us anyway.

Just one half of the "birds and the bees" equation.

Ken,

this is probably one of the most precious series of shots I've ever seen & your narration is priceless.

I am so glad you got these amazing shots.

You've put a smile on my face this morning.

Thanks for sharing.....

You know Ken, I wonder...It seems like at least that one egg was exposed for quite a long time, Mom was sitting on the other one and almost ignoring it. Do you think perhaps she knew it wasn't going to hatch? Seems like she never sat on it when I was there with you folks that Saturday. My faves are #4s (GREAT caption! ), 6 and 8 (another ROTFL caption). Gee, you're GOOD... BTW, BC was a bust for me and Mr Zoom on Saturday, sucky light and not much besides the Usual Suspects though we did see a young Stilt on the back pond where we saw 'em before, he's done growed-up a lot.

Best Wishes,
Steve

Steve -
Now, there's no way that we would know about that one egg. I was thinking that the purpose in staying off of that one egg was more to reguilate the amount of incubation. She was sitting on both of the eggs on Sunday morning.
Sorry to here about the non-happening on Saturday. The Perigrine and the Skimmers have been pretty reliable in the evening.

These really are amazing shots - and I'm not saying that because the Killdeer is my favourite bird! Great stuff!

Jim -
Thanks. The Killdeer is as good as any species to pick as a "favorite bird". And in contrast to Avocet/Stilt chicks, the Killdeer chicks are clearly identifiable with the distinct Killdeer markings.

Next year, I hope we can get lucky enough to find nests let alone see them hatch. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
