Y'all heard about my acquisition of a Canon 500mm f/4 and got to see some samples from a 2 hour test shoot the day I received it. I went out with Steve Wolfe on Sunday to give it a real workout whereupon my beloved 1D Mark IIn suffered a catastrophic shutter failure. The camera gods are mad at me

WOW sorry to hear this about the shutter. How many clicks were on it? Were you under any of the warentee? The series looks great

Hi Lou, I didn't check the click count before sending it in but it had to be in the neighborhood of around 100k clicks. Out of warranty repair is going to cost me US $460 parts and labor and the wait will be up to 10 days OUCH!
These are outstanding. You need to get that camera fixed, and start shooting. Or, maybe this is an excuse for new. Either way we need to see than 2 hours worth.
Well Ken, it was working flawlessly right up to the end! First shot plunge is awesome! Hoping for a speedy and full recovery, that glass still shoots good on your Xti, keep at it man

After what I spent for the 500 I won't be buying a new body for a least another year or two. It's in for repair and should be back in action the weekend next. I'll just have to suffer along with my entry level XTi till the little lady returns

Thanks Karl. I'm going to go out to the ponds this weekend and see how the lens performs on the XTi under more controlled conditions. Nothing will prevent me from using the new lens

Giving your cameras names now, huh? I started worrying about you a long time ago, but this .............. Hmmmmmm.
Well, at least you got a taste of what that combo could do before the "incident".

Sorry to hear about the death of your shutter my friend. A memorial service should be held in it's honor
Looks like your already adjusted to your new focal length.
Out of curiosity how are you shooting Ken. Hand held or are you tripod / Monopod / Bushhawk mounted
ant
Hi Ant,
The camera is in for repair as we speak (virtualy speaking of course) and no memorial will be necessary. We expect a full recovery
I am shooting the new lens on my duopod, sometimes on my hands and knees and sometimes I just let it float there in the air by itself. Seriously, all hand held - man of steel that I am.

El G, I give my shooting buddies names so why not my shooting gear as well?

Well Ken I guess its still cheaper than getting a new camera and I think these digital cameras take a lot more beating on the shutter than the old film taking days as I find I take many more photos than are needed at a visit planed for a reason just because I'm there and it cost nothing while I would think one roll would do it with film many years ago. So I guess we take our lumps for digital.
