p.1 #1 · Lenscoat Suggestions

Lenscoats... love 'em? Or don't really need them?

I recently got my nikon 500mm afs lens and was wondering if a lenscoat was necessary for misty ocean conditions? So misty that if you walk you can feel wet on your face. Does a lenscoat help protect the lens' body enough to justify a 100 dollar purchase?

If yes, any suggestions on what kind of lenscoat I should get? Also if you have any do-it-yourself lens protection methods I'd like to hear it!

Get the lens coat. It's like a padded overcoat for your lens. It will protect it from all sorts of things, dents, scratches, moisture to some extent, etc. Just pick the pattern that fits your most common environment. I think the camo aspect of it has negligble benefits, but the protection aspect is a must for an expensive lens like the 500mm.

I have a (black) lens coat on my 500/4 IS. It isn't there to protect the lens from moisture since I have a lens cover for that, it is more to protect the lens from scratches.
