I like them - - they're very dramatic.

Only thing I'd do is some cropping of them. A tad too much "dead" space for me

Agree with Lil, too. Not sure if you could, but lower perspective is always nicer on ducks. Great job on the colors and sharpness.

I don't think standards are competitive in the sense of being "up to".

these are very nice, contrast seems a bit harsh for soft fuzzy ducklings
and agree with others about the crops and #1 needs about a 3 degree
CW rotation. That said, these are really nice with the dark BG's

Very nice clear shots. I would crop a bit too. How did you get that black background, in PP?. New to forum and don't know how some of these things are done.

thanks for the replies - I had put them on another forum and one person had suggested about creating more space for the ducks to swim into.

would you suggest a very tight crop so its just the duck and the reflection or leave a bit of space surrounding it ?

as for the black background it was pretty dark to begin with so just lowered it using curves.

couldn`t get much lower than this perspective otherwise i would have been in the water head first - shooting from a sloped embankment

will try cropping and see how they look.

I agree with the above, the dark bg works well here but I think I'd try cropping a bit more, placing the duckling a somewhat lower in the photos, seems like he's floating a little too high. Otherwise, nicely-done with sharp details, you may also want to do what Dave suggests and lower the contrast some as most folks prefer their little ducklings to be "softer and kinder", but that's just a matter of taste IMO. #2's the pick of the 2 for me...

Thanks steve - here is a slight rework.

Have cropped the picture and added a diffuse glow to try and soften them a bit.

What you have to remember is these are scottish ducks and are as hard as nails !

hopefully these are a bit better on the eye.
